question about sequencer remote control

Post by P5music »

Hello,
I would like to know if it is possible to control M3's sequencer from an external device with midi commands or sysexes.
I mean jumping to whatever position in the song at whatever time without glitches, during playback.
If it is possible, what happens to notes that are playing at that moment?

Thanks in advance.

Yes, it is possible.

You have to set MIDI clock to External USB or MIDI. USB if you want the DAW in computer, MIDI if you want another sequencer control M3.

Also, enable "Receive Ext. Realtime Command".

On the external Sequencer, make sure it's set as MIDI sync Master, Sync is being sent out, Also, MMC Master and MMC is being output.

The notes will just be skipped up to the new transpose position.

do you mean no note-off or all-notes-off is sent?

Yo can control Start and Stop but I'm not sure if you could control song locations. ie: you can't jump to measure number 32 from an external sequencer. You have to do it manully from M3 touch-screen.

Yes, it is possible. I do it all the time using Fantom-G as master sequencer and M3 set to slave.

Fantom-G is set to output MIDI Sync and MMC and is acting as Master for both. M3 MIDI clock is set to External MIDI and Receive Ext. Realtime Commands is checked.

When I use next/previous button for bars, both Fantom-G and M3 go to same meausre.

Thanks for the response.
I mean that the jump happens during playback seamlessly, with no glitches.
Is it possible?

Since we are dealing with MIDI, there are going to be some glitches. It's not linear audio where sound is available at every point in time (that's why you can scroll throgh linear audio). MIDI is note on/off only. If you miss the note on message, there is no sound. If you have controller messages or prorgram change messages in bar 5, and you skip that and continue on bar 8, the information in bar 5 will not be sent to sound generator that will result in wrong sound or wrong settings.

The behavior of notes currently playing depends on the Master instrument. In my case I am using Fantom-G. When I change the bar forward or reverse, M3 follows but all notes cut off before continuing from the new position.

Provided that the programmed jump has musical meaning, that is there are not cut notes or incoherent settings, then I would like to know if the jump is executed whatever distance is between the points, with no interruption of the continuity of playback.
thanks
