OS update request: programmable arp

Post by Hugo »

So I've been playing around with the KARMA function, and although I haven't delved very deep into it, it seems pretty hard coming up with original, personal stuff; you can manipulate other peoples patterns in various ways. I'm recommended to pick up the KARMA software - and I definately will, but I really - REALLY - don't like being tied to the computer. This is actually the main reason I chose Korg over Yamaha, as the latter is far to dependant on being used in conjunction with a computer.

So: I would very much like to see Korg update the OS to include a programmable arpeggiator - ideally I would like to program KARMA patterns, but I guess this is too complicated since it's not already a feature...? I can't be the only one that would like to create original patterns on the M3.

even though i am not that much into arpeggiators (and also not into karma), i agree with you- it seems like a step back in this regard from the triton and even from "toys" like the microx (though really not trying to bash this cool little synth)

i would not put your hopes up too high though, since i think it´s obvious that korg will not put any more effort into the m3 and is concentrating on it´s successor, even though this very function is already (or again) in the m50, which more or less is an m3 minus some features, in the same way they forgot about the oasys users, when its "budget version" (the m3) received its sequencer overhaul.

If you need only Drum Patterns then you can do it on the M3 itself but for more
complicated stuff you will need the software...as for implementing it in the M3
itself i dont think it is possible. I mastered the KM3 to a certain level and i am
already able to create a GE exactly the way i want it to sound (which in KM3
is probably very complex and complicated) and from my knowledge and
experience with it i dont think M3 can do any of it on its own with its own
sequencer...it will totally ruin the whole machine itself. The KM3 software is
worth every penny but it is very complex, as complex as nothing that i have
encountered so far yet, even though i used hundreds of softwares and machines
to create all kinds of beats, styles, songs, patterns, arps and sounds.
You will REALLY have to sit down on it and start from scratch to find out things.
It doesnt work as any other daw or sequencer where you input notes and thats
it, in here is way different, you have few notes running up and down and from
them you have to create the rhytm and melody you want and need...and no,
there is no piano roll editor nor anything to record notes in...its all parameters
adjustements and manipulations to achieve what you need.

If you're performing live, have you looked into using RPPR in sequencer mode? It is very powerful, particularly when you start to do things like using control changes, sysex, and even triggering multiple patterns for example from the chord trigger pads.

I have a KARMA workstation and I haven't got the software yet, but I think i'm beginning to 'get' KARMA - being able to turn a pattern or phrase into a fluid entity that you can tweak, so that it's not just a static phrase.

I have not yet looked into RPPR, but I don't perform live either. I'm hoping my laptop is powerful enough to drive the KARMA software, so I don't have to drag the M3 into the studio.

Well, it is still immensely powerfull for user-programmed patterns and such.

KORG has a great video on it here:

I don't quite get what you mean about being powerful and not dragging the M3 into the studio. The KARMA software will only run when the M3 is attached. But most laptops should be able to run it. It is capable of providing another set of GE units, but at its least you can use it to design GEs and upload them to the M3 - no realtime processing there! The M3 is still the bit actually playing the GEs.

X-Trade,
Thanks for posting the link to the RPPR video, very helpful stuff there.
Regarding my laptop; it's a 700mhz Pentium III, so it'll probably be a little low on power ;) But I should get some spare money soon, so I'll probably buy a new one.
