Would appreciate help setting up a M1

Post by AlfieF »

I would really like some advice on setting up a M1 that hasn't been used for several years & has just had a new battery put in. There are 2 main problems but i don't know whether they are linked
1. Have connected it to a dualboot(OS9 & OS Tiger) G4 powermac using the Edirol UM1EX USB-midi cable. I installed the relevent drivers in both operating systems & used Sysex Librarian in OSX Tiger to upload the original factory sounds that I downloaded from the Korg site (mpreld sysex), also a M1 patch with files including lunesyx, origglob.syx & others.
I thought they'd succesfully uploaded but, after restarting the M1, the display shows initprog (Ithink) & the only sound that will play is a piano.
Any ideas what am I doing wrong?

2.The second problem is that I would like to set the M1 up to work with a music notation program (Mosaic-MOTU) as it used to. This program only works in OS9. Booting into OS9 & playing a midi score out through the M1 I see the light flashing on the Edirol interface showing data is being transferred to the M1 but there is no sound playing out through the speakers/headphone socket. Mosaic uses FreeMidi & the M1 shows up as a device in FreeMidi setup but what do I need to alter to hear sound? Or is this because I don't have the correct bank of sounds in yet?
Then, on trying to input notes from the M1 into Mosaic I don't get any lights flashing on the Edirol interface - how do I tell the M1 to input to the program?

I'd really appreciate any help as I'm completely out of my depth with this.

Before you try to dump the data you've got into the M1.
Check to see if MIDI filtering is disabled on system exclusive messages.

Also see if the memory protection is turned on for Prog & combi memories.

Don't have an M1 here to tell you the key presses.
I seem to remember the MIDI filter for sysex defaults to on, and it need to be DIS.

Yes you need to check that system exclusive is enabled, write protect is off and sometimes local needs to be off depending on which midi program you use.
I have managed to successfully reload an M1 using windows media player to quite simply play the Midi file that korg provides.
Check your M1 is set to midi channel one in the global settings and that your midi program is also on channel one.
I might be you have missed a connection when changing your battery, might be worth opening up and checking that everything is plugged in.
