TR & finale

I have Finale 2004 ( imac) and a TR and i can get it to write music but I can't seem to get the hang of multi timbre playback what is the secret?

You have to configure the timbres yourself, and you have to make compromises on the effects.

In Sequencer mode you have 16 tracks all ready and set up, you can send program and volume changes to them. But the TR only has one Insert Effect and Two master effects, so initially you will hear the dry programs, it is up to you to decide which effects are most important and route them yourself, like when you are building your own Combi.
