Zero 8 vs Traktor Pro / total control from Z8 to Traktor

Post by Akilah »

Hey Fellows,

I just got a Zero 8, one of the last I guess.

My idea is to use it as mixer and controller in combination with Traktor Pro and 4 decks.
So far it look like there are not very much users out there which are using the Z8 this way, because I can't find much information in that regard!?

However, hopefully somebody here can give me some hints to get a working set up, specially regarding the midi mapping.
The TSI file which comes with Traktor will set Traktor to the internal mixer mode and it looks like the idea behind that TSI is to use the Z8 only as a controller / interface.

I think that is not the best way to use it, I would adjust Traktor in the external mixer mode and then mapping all important functions by myself.
I would like to use the Z8 to control everything from it, so I do not wan't any additional controller and I think that should work!?

The first problem which I got while mapping one of the rotarys above the display to use it for playlist scrolling is as follows:
- I mapped the first rotary to scroll / brows through my playlists, the mapping worked.

- If I then try it I see that it will only browse in one direction, doen't matter in which direction I turn the knob.

- Sometimes it goes up, sometimes down in the playlist, sometimes I also see that it jumps up/down and there is no straight way to browse up or down.

- I already tried the different settings in Traktor for a rotary knob, I also tested some different setting in the Z8 system menu - now success.

Has anybody a idea what goes wrong here?
I saw a few posts in die NI Forums about the same issue, but no solution so far.

If anybody has a custom TSI file which he would share, it would be very much appreciated.
This could be something from which I can start my settings.

Hope you guys will share your experience with me. ;)
Regards,
Akilah :)

I have been trying to use the Zero8 with Traktor in 4 decks for months now. I have it working but there are many limitations that really dissapoint.

The rotary knobs on the zero 8 suck! You will never get them to work the same way in both directions. I have gone through the NI forums and every post there also describes the same issue. Epic fail!!

Posted this answer in the NI boards as well here...

The reason this doesn't work properly is because how the Zero8 is sending the messages from the endless encoder. The endless encoders have a CC message for twisting right, left, push, and I believe push and turn(not positive on this). Since Traktor is only reading 1CC message per command, when you twist the knob (let's say right) it is smooth scrolling but when you twist it left it doesn't work. BOMES fixes this by making the CC messages that are coming out of the encoder and reading them as keystrokes through BOMES. I have talked with NI about this numerous times and so have others with the Zero8, and we always come back to the same answer..and that is BOMES.

Hope that answers your question.
