Korg M1- controller for Logic/MOTU Ultralite? Settings help?

Post by whatyadoin »

Hi everyone,

Could someone please help me get started with my setup? It's pretty basic - but I'm new and learning...

I have a Korg M1 (want to use as controller)
Emu Proteus 1
MOTU Ultralite mk3
Macbook Pro
Glyph external drive with firewire

Here is the setup:

Hardware:
Glyph fw800 -> Macbook Pro fw800
MOTU Ultralite fw400 -> Glyph fw400
Korg M1 midi in/out ->MOTU midi in/out
Korg M1 midi thru -> Proteus 1 midi thru

M1 "midi global" local control off
clock: external
Channel:1

Proteus 1: Multi mode

Software:
Macbook Pro:
System prefs -> Sound -> Input/Output are set to MOTU Ultralite

Macbook Pro -> applications -> utilities -> audio midi setup -> default input/default output and system output are set to MOTU Ultralite
(the audio midi setup -> midi devices, I added the korg m1 and the proteus and connected lines to the in/out on the motu ultralite icon

When you doubleclick on the korg m1 device, it has 2 tabs for properties / ports set up. For the properties tab - Do I highlight the first 8 "transmits/receives" channel buttons for the m1 and then highlight all 16 for the proteus? For the ports tab, Port 1, connectors for port 1: midi in "1" midi out "1" ?

I'm lost with the logic setup. Please advise. I'm hearing nothing when I play a song I had started on a different setup.

Also, I have an MOTU microlite midi box (5 inputs/outputs) - would it be easier to hook this into the chain and how would I do that?

Thank you so much for your help in advance.

What do you expect to hear? What are you listening to? How is the thing you expect to hear connected up to the thing you are listening to?

I'm going to take a wild guess that you expect to hear the M1 through speakers on your computer, but you don't have audio cables hooked from the outputs on the M1 into audio inputs on something connected to your computer. But I could be wrong.

I have phones connected to the MOTU ultralite, and I hear nothing while the song is playing? Volumes are all up? What am I doing wrong? Thanks much.

What happens when you press the keys on the M1 with your fingers? Do you hear what you're playing on the MOTU headphones?

Do you have the L+R Audio Outputs of the M1 hooked up to the MOTU Audio Inputs 1 & 2?

I have the 1L/2R of the M1 going into the Main input bottom 1/2 of the MOTU - but I still don't hear anything. This has to be something simple I'm missing.

When I press a key on the m1, it produces a note with a slash thru it on the Logic bottom drk gray bar. I had logic set up to the microlite midi unit and it's still asking ?'s about that, but I can't find where to check the setup in logic again?

Let's just stick with one thing at a time for now. What's happening in Logic doesn't matter yet.

Plug the headphones into the Phones Jack of the M1, to be sure you're getting some sound from the keyboard.

Yes, after I turned Local to on inside global.

When you say the "Main input bottom 1/2", are you specifically referring to "MIC/INSTR. IN 1" on the front and "MIC/INSTR. IN 2" on the back?

Now plug the headphones into the MOTU to be sure you hear it now. Set the levels so that it is loud but not clipping/overloading when you play the keyboard hard/loud.

No, it's on the back - the "Main Inputs" 1 and 2 - they are horizontally side by side and the other inputs are vertical. Should it be connected vertically in the "1" inputs or should I move them over to the "3" vertical inputs?

According to what I see here:

http://www.motu.com/products/motuaudio/ultralite-mk3

There is no Main Inputs 1 and 2 on the back. It shows Main Outputs 1 and 2 on the back. Does your product not match what is shown on the website image for the connectors on the back?

Sorry, first time hooking up this unit, you're right, they're outputs "main outs'. I moved all connections over to "3" verticals and still hear nothing, though.

Nope, still wrong connections. You need to plug into input 1 on the front, in the middle/center of the large round input labeled "MIC/INSTR. IN 1", and then the corresponding one on the back labeled "MIC/INSTR. IN 2".
