Recording from an external sequencer?

Post by StudioMan »

Im trying to record from SX3, to the internal M50 sequencer. I did EVERYTHING exactly correct as spelled out on page 140 of the PG.

But it won't record. I know the signal is coming in, as the M50 is playing everything perfect, both thru the USB & Midi in (I tried them both).

I tried it thru both the Midi-in, and USB, both the same thing.
Note: #1, says "Midi out of your external sequencer". I tried that, setting Midi Clock to "External MIDI", same to "External USB" (But this I think is a miss on the manual writer, I think either should be one in the same if you have it set to the correct one). I checked the box "Receive Ext. Realtime commands".

When I press REC/WRITE, it seems to go into "record-standby mode", but when I press play in SX3 (Cubase), the M50 doesn't start recording ever...

I know SX3 fairly well (I'm on it probably 20 hrs per week for the last 3 years or so), so obviously I seriously doubt the problem is within SX3 (Particularly since it's able to play the M50 EXACTLY PERFECT as I recorded the Sequence).

Anyone ever record from a sequencer (or better yet, a Cubase version), into the M50 sequencer? Ever see this issue?

Any help will be GREATLY APPRECIATED!

on my tr-61, pressing rec does put it into a kind of 'record standby' mode. but you have to hit play to actually start recording. after hitting play you get a two bar count in, then it starts recording...

so you need to hit record and play, wait for the two bar count in, then hit play on your sequencer

X-trade,
Well, ya, that works, but I need the sequence in the midi time code (so I can have a click to feed to the drummer).

As per the manual (PG, Pg140), it should work.

FYI: You can change the 2 bar pre-count. And further more, it shouldn't have the pre-count if the M50 is set to external time code anyways (The pre count would indicated the M50, or whatever midi player is set to internal time clock)..

How it "SHOULD" work; Once the M50 is in "Ready" mode, once I hit Play in SX3 (Or whatever external sequencer), the M50 should take the time code, turn-on, and the Sequence is EXACTLY on the click. So once replayed on the M50, it is in PERFECT Midi time..

I'm leaning towards something in SX3 NOT sending the time code along with the Midi hits (notes,CCs, etc.).

But thanks for trying to help!

I use Cubase Studio 4, but in the transport options you do have to tick several boxes and choose where to output MTC. personally I wasn't aware that the korg sequencers recieved MTC.

checking it out now:

go to the Transport menu > Project Synchronisation Setup.

I have a box on that page saying MIDI TimeCode Destinations, plus another saying MIDI Clock Destinations.

Thanks X-Trade,,,, but a little late!! LOL,,,

Just now came down to post,,,, I found the issue,,,, NOTHING to do with the M50, I had is set correct...

You are 100% correct! I didn't have SX3 sending the Midi time code!!!

It's DONE!!! Lost well over 10 hours believing it was the M50,,, not SX3!! But the song (Hot & Cold by Katy Perry) is complete... We will practice it tomorrow night, & be playing it this next weekend.. Our FIRST fully Sequenced song from start to finish...

Thanks again X-Trade!!!! I owe you big!!!(Even tho I found it just before I read your post)!!!

Respectfully,
Mike

Hi,

Can you please explain how exactly you have that set up. I tried to check/uncheck various boxes, but nothing seems to record from Cubase 4 to M50.

Thanks,
Ed
