Potential buyer worries

Post by ix »

Hi guys

sorry to post on the negative but its like this.I'm currently looking at downsizing a studio and selling off a karma , some old dx synths and stuff and focusing the studio around possibly a neko or oasys.I do experimental ambient and like the oasys for its ability to sample , resynthesize , vector mix and karma sequence , Ok so its an easy choice but i am worried.I see alot of posts about discontinued and ok so thats no major deal for me but support ? .I looked into the oasys and its a motherboard based system ? and then alarm bells ring , my issue is simple. £5000 for this machine is alot indeed but then its alot of synth but 'what if' factors make me wonder - in 10 years will this thing be servicable ? will motherboard replacement be possible ? are korg still developing this as an open system for the future in the sense that you will be able to replace or upgrade in the future hardware wise ? As its based on linux i think ? does this mean its possible korg might in the future expand the machine hardware wise( use the shell but offer a motherboard upgrade ).You see all these things are pretty critical arnt they as a potential buyer ? if i spend £5000 and liquidate alot of gear and end up with a synth that cant be repaired then it would mean the end of my writing or i will have to shift to the daw only and given the current view of many that oasys is being toned down as a potential buyer i dont have great faith in the level of investment required and return offered ina future sense .Its the motherboard issue that worries me most and non repairability.I could live with the oasys as it stands now forever , its functions cover everything for me , new expansions - cool , but its not non development that i am posting about , its future ability to repair this machine.I feel the korg ads dont full expand on what your buying into enough , its says for years to come but for £5000 i need to know this machine will be supported in terms of parts and motherboards are discontinued every 3 months it seems , can korg port this to a new board if necessary or have the future proofed the machine in relation to this ?

I would like to know peoples thoughts and just whats what regards the build , i need 20 years service from this machine at least as its to become my last workstation ( due to my being sick of studio upgrades and selling and buying and the whole want of it , i want to just make music now )

It would be nice to hear some positives to counter balance my rather gloomy mail :) I can see the positives of the machine and functions but have reservations i can get 20 years out of the machine ? or that there will be ability to repair the machine due to it being a third party motherboard? Please correct me if i am wrong of if this machine could easily use another motherboard or korg have considered this potential future problem - as boards die which they really do will will be able to get new ones ?

cheers

This might be one for Korg support to answer as I don't really know enough about the hardware side either.

However, you should not let this influence your decision on whether to buy the Oasys.

Surely, you would buy another workstation without knowing if the hardware can be upgraded in the future. I know other workstations do not come anywhere near the Oasys in terms of cost, but neither does the functionality of any other workstation.
