Microkorg XL

Post by depulse »

It seems there is a new updated Microkorg on the way, based on the Radias (which is always automatically spelled incorrectly for some reason)....

Expected price around 600 Euros, to be shown at the NAMM 2009. (I hope)

Another pic :

Looks to be an R3 heart in a battery powerable & minikeys microKorg style body.

Very sleek and retro. :) I like the cute, blocky, piano-like keys. The (pixel-based?) LCD looks like it may be adaptive and informative too (which is, honestly, a 'must' when you have fewer knobs/buttons on the fascia).

but what's the difference with respect to actual R3?
both seems to be based on Radias Engine, it is only a look matter then? or there is some substantial differences between this microXL and the R3?

and overal why minikeys why?????

Because it's a µKorg! It needs no explanation. :) The clue is in the title. It's a concept synth.

This synth indeed has the same engine as the R3, RADIAS, EMX1. The key difference is the FX that are derived from KP3, listen to the demos and you will hear it is not a microKORG by any stretch of the imagination.

Looking at the spec I'm not too impressed. Especially considering the low polyphony, limited arpeggiator (too few patterns, but worst, no user patterns) and limited effects. Hopefully the user interface is better than on the original.

Pluses: vocoder, included mic (but is it any good?), usb, midi out AND the small keys - this is a plus as far as I'm concerned (better with smaller but more keys than the other way round + the mobility factor).

This is good news...means the Micro Korg is going down in price...but as usual Korg keeps subtracting instead of adding features. Anyone here remember the triton extreme? then it was phased out in favor of the extremely limited TRiton LE which has now been replaced by the even more limited (no sampling what so ever) M-50.

Thank gawd Kaoss Products have not gotten this kind of poor treatment.

Don't hold your breath for the microKORG to go down, the XL is a big brother and the range will now consist of microKORG, microKORG XL and R3. I would wait to play and hear the product before making your mind up. The microKORG has been a really great seller purley because of the big sound and retro looks, nothing to do with the toy keyboard or low polyphony. I'm sure if we were at the same point with the original we would be slating it. The demos of the XL speak for themselves, polyphony doesn't seem to be an issue for my ears.

Regarding your comments on Triton, the LE was a budget version of the Triton and was replaced by the Triton TR to run alongside the Extreme. The LE or TR was never intended as a replacement for the Extreme or Triton. The sampling option was not taken up by so many users of both the LE and TR and this is why Korg dropped it on the M50. With M50 they added a touch screen, more insert FX, great PCM, seperate EQ on each combi timbre and seq track, seem to be all pluses for me.
