Midi Problems
Ok, i guess i am sort of a new user to all this type of midi type stuff so hopefully this can be answered easily. This is my set up: Micron midi controller with midi out to virus ti desktop synth. Midi out from the virus is connected to my kp3 midi in. My problem is that i can not get any sound output of the kp3. I just want to use it for effects processing on the sound that is created and output from my synth. I have read the manual and even searched online, does anyone have any idea what is the problem, can i even do this or do i need my sound to be a different input? Thanks for any help. hope this makes sense.

I can hear synth/drums noises from the kp3. Also, if i input into the kp3 from my synth using a guitar cable into the mic input, it works fine as far as effects processing is concerned. It is just when i try to input midi i get no output. Ive set all midi channels the same and i just dont know what the problem could be.
Midi is just control data. It isn't an audio signal. You need to connect your virus outs to your line ins on your kp3, and make sure the switch on the back of the kp3 is set to "direct".
You should definately read some about midi. Midi will allow you to activate kp3 controls (turn on samples, switch effects etc.) from the virus. If you connect the midi out from the kp3 to the virus, you can control the virus with the kp3. This is all really cool, and worth knowing about. But for just effecting the virus with the kp3, you don't need midi.

midi is a pretty broad subject. What do you want to do?
Basically it's a way of interfacing machines. Like if I have a synth, and I want to trigger a kaoss pad's sample from the synth, I can do that. Or if I want to adjust the cutoff knob on the synth with the x/y plane of the kaoss pad, I can do that too.
Sequencers output midi data to synthesizers. You record your playing into the sequencer, and it will record all the key presses and durations via the midi cable. It won't actually record audio; it just records events. It knows you held down Gb for 3 seconds and then hit C#. It can then tell the synth to play those notes again.
Crap like that. It's cool, but you don't really learn about it until you use it. You don't necessarily need to use it. If you are playing a guitar you don't really need it.
