You get Ver Err if the version you are trying to upgrade to is lower or same version as currently installed.

try reflashing the Panel chip, by holding REC+MEMORY while powering on.
Sometimes this helps with Volcas that behave weirdly. Other than that, I would suspect that you have dirt/spill on the touch strip.

Just read the instructions LOL "This is only for the OK GO edition. Regular volca samples will not be able to load these factory samples." Hi folks, nowhere I have read what type of memory was used in the Volca sample. So I don't know what is the maximum number of write or erase cycles, if using a custom samples. Anyone know this?
