Help with download of OS1.63

Post by derek bradburn »

hello,
Have just downloaded and installed OS 1.63. but I'm having trouble getting the Res.1.6.3 to download properly.
When I download it from Korg and then unzip it, it does not come up as a BKP file, just Res.163. Consequently when I transfer it across to my USB stick and open it up there is nothing showing.
I was under the impression that unless it is shown as a BKP file then it won't install.
Don't understand what is happening- what bit of hair I had left has now been pulled out !.
Any advice and help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Derek B.

My understanding is that you don't need the Res file unless your whole system is corrupted/missing. The Os .bkp file is all you need. After you have saved all, do a Utilities, Factory Restore to load the new Sounds. Then use your backup to load your old set.

If you want those new sounds and styles, you need to download and install "BOTH" files placed on the Korg site.

It helps if you read the instructions found inside the zip files.

Sorry but NOT true - you only need "Pa3X_os_v163.zip"
To get any changes to SOUNDs and STYLEs follow the instructions on page 4 of the included "Pa3X - Operative System Update.pdf"

The " Pa3X_res_v163.zip" file is for full system reset - you do not need this unless you want to completely reset the PA3X (useful if you are encountering problems)

Funny - I wonder why this instruction is included at the bottom of page 4?
Loading the operating system may also update Styles, Pads,
Sounds and Performances. This type of data is not actually updated
until you execute a Factory Restore. The need of executing
a Factory Restore is indicated in the Release Notes accompanying
the operating system.

Hi Bill

Your quote is correct - you do need to execute the "factory restore" for the changed sounds etc.. but you do not use any other files.
In the old days Korg gave us 2 zip files - OS & Resources
What is now a little confusing is that they still give us 2 files but the "res" zip file is NOT resources - it is only for full reset.

If you look back in the forum you will see this clarified in a post by Paolo from Korg - it confused most of us in the early PA3X days....
Here it is (related to 1.50 update): http://www.korgforums.com/forum/phpBB2/ ... ht=#501819
Paolo@Korg wrote:Hi,

There is no need for the "Pa3X_res_v150.pkg" file. You just need the "Pa3X_os_v150.pkg" file. The second one is only to be used when a full reset is needed.

After loading the "Pa3X_os_v150.pkg" file, as explained in the instructions you can find together with the .pkg file, please do not forget to go to Media > Utility and do a Factory Restore.

Remember to save your custom data before updating the system.

Best regards,
Paolo

Help with OS 1.63.

Post by derek bradburn »

Hello,
Thanks to all who replied to my query regarding installing the new op system.
I'm pleased that I'm not the only one who appears confused.
I wish Korg would make it simple and straightforward- an operation and realise that not all users are experts like Sharpe and others.
So just to re-cap- I only need to install the PA3x op 1.6.3 and then do a Factory Restore !.
I can forget about the Res download !.
Finally, where can I find info on what the new Op sys gives me ? i.e. sounds, styles etc, and there appears to be no mention of Android and Iphones !.
regards,

For new sounds look at the last pages of Trumpet & Trbn (7 new), Sax (1 new), Woodwind (1 new), Synth Pad (8 new), Synth Lead (8 new), Drum (1 new). List is available as a pdf download.
We are all still waiting to see about the Tablet connectivity thing - it seems the Pa3x is ready but there are no apps yet. I'm hoping its more than just a file transfer capability - say maybe substitute touch screen or other functions.
I'd be prepared to pay a few dollars for interesting apps if they became available.

So now Korg is saying don't read the manuals?

Is it any wonder folks have trouble with these updates!

Absolutely not - that's quite crazy…..
The manual is clear and accurate.

I admit that I DIDN'T read the manual for the first PA3X update and wrongly assumed that it was the same as the PA2XPro and earlier (i.e. a 2 file process - OS and Resources).

If I had read the manual I would have saved myself time and confusion.

To get this OS update and any new resources installed successfully, you must read and follow the manual.
The manual actually explains that it is ALL contained in the single PKG file and also explains that the "..res…" file is for full keyboard RESET - it is NOT a RESOURCES file.

The only reason I became confused in the earlier days of PA3X was because I didn't follow the manual.

Hope you've achieved the update successfully

Correct - everything is in that single PKG file.
Derek wrote:I can forget about the Res download
It is actually a good idea to download this and keep safe in case you need to reset the whole PA3X.
I always download all the files and "file" them safely just in case they become unavailable.

Please see Korg's latest response in the PA3X 1.63 Update topic (sticky) - it is all looking good but Korg have expressed twice now that they are not yet ready with the "tablet" side of the update, so I am guessing that this update already comprises the necessary "whatever" in preparation for the completed development.

Pete,

I was just having some fun with you - I still believe in reading the manuals.

Seems to me however, that the Res file must have some use and must have been changed in some way because it also has the new version number.

I'm just guessing here, but I'll bet it contains the latest OS changes, such as adding the Global setting to MIDI out.

Loaded the new OS yesterday and was missing the new DNC sounds, eventually I installed the system reset file and all was then there.

There is still much confusion on this issue. You do not need the reset file to access the new sounds. You just need to tap a few buttons on your Pa3x after installing the new OS. Please read the instructions. Factory Restore is NOT the same as Factory Reset.

Hey Bill
All cool - I was just worried that you were missing the point which is so easy to do with these things.
I think you'll find that the "RES" files will restore the entire PA3X including the same OS update of course - so it's an "either/or" decision as to which file you choose - either way the PA3X will end up at 1.63
:D

Hey Barry - there are no dumb ones here - we're ALL smart - let's face it - we all bought a PA3X!!!
Anyhow, I completely empathise, having made the same mistakes myself with these updates.

So I might advise "READ THE MANUAL" but the problem is I still don't take my own advice
You get a nice new machine and all you want to do is switch it on and start pressing buttons then later go back to the manuals when you start to think that the machine is rubbish and won't perform..... etc...etc...

Enjoy your new 1.63's - (haven't had time to do mine yet!!!!)

Cheers
