Kronos / Jupiter 80 midi registration change?
Hi all,
I just got a Jupiter-80 as a second keyboard for live (replacing a TR61 LE that I was using as a midi controler for Kronos sounds). My first impressions after 3 days of having the Jupiter is that for me, its the perfect companion to the Kronos tonally. VERY different strengths! So far I've spent my time with the Jupe familiarizing myself with it's architecture and sound potential but now it's time to create song specific patches for use with the Kronos and control those patch changes via the Kronos.
What I'd like to do is use the Kronos's setlist to change registrations on the Jupiter. It seems logical to use only combi's and set one voice as EXT or EX2 to send program change... but apparently not...
There are MANY threads on this forum that address this in general (I've read most of them prior to posting this)... but none specific to the Jupiter 80 (and it's architecture is certainly different) I've managed to change live sets (Roland speak) via midi from the Kronos, but can't get complete Registrations to change.
Kronos global channel is set to ch1, Jupiter is channel 2 (system, midi, registration control channel>2) but there are also individual midi channels for each JP "part" (Perc, Lower, Upper, Solo). I can set these all up for specific channels that I can get to corespond to EXT or EX2 channels in a combi and change them within a "Registration" but I can't yet figure out how to send a midi command to change an overall registration from the Kronos. :/
I hope that this is at least somewhat clear. One thing I am certain about, is that it's clearer than the JP-80 owners manual in regards to midi implimentation (unless you're using the JP as a master controller). LOL
Thanks for any suggestions in advance.

Try setting the jupiters track in the kronos's combi mode to EXT2 and mess with msb/lsb

In the Jupiter's System Setup > MIDI Tx/Rx screen, check that the Receive Program Change and Receive Bank Change settings set to ON. The Jupiter's manual says these are turned on by default, but you know, one has to ask.
The Jupiter's MIDI Implementation guide has the info.

Here's how you set up the Kronos:
Let's say a combi's Timbre 2 will be the control for Registration change.
Set the MIDI channel to channel 2; set the Status to EX2.
In the MSB bit, set this to 083.
In the LSB bit, set this to 000 for the first 128 registrations (corresponds to [01]A-1 - [04]D-8), or to 001 as necessary for the second set of 128 registrations (corresponds to [05]A-1 - [08]D-8) .
Finally, set the Kronos's Timbre 2's actual program number to the registration number you want to change to. It can be from any bank in the Kronos.
Some examples:
If you want the Kronos to send a change for Registration Bank 1, A-1, the setting is (I think...)
MSB 083
LSB 000
Program # (on Kronos, for Timbre 2) to 000
For Registration Bank 1, C-1, setting is:
MSB 083
LSB 000
Program # 023 on Kronos
For Reg Bank 2, A-1
MSB 083
LSB 000
Program # 032 on Kronos
Well, I think that's how it's going to work... I believe the Set List transmits bank select and program changes only on its Global MIDI channel, so I think you're going to have to use a timbre in a combi to do the Registration change on the Jupiter.

HardSync - You're my new best friend and a midi GENIUS! I tried to read the midi implementation guide and quiet honestly it may as well have been written in hieroglyphs as far as I was concerned. I figured there had to be a way, but i'd be damned if I could figure it out. Now that I know how thanks to you, its confirmed that I would NEVER have figured it out on my own!HardSync wrote:In the Jupiter's System Setup > MIDI Tx/Rx screen, check that the Receive Program Change and Receive Bank Change settings set to ON. You got it right! Only thing that was incorrect was your second analogy:
For Registration Bank 1, C-1, setting is:
MSB 083
LSB 000
Program # 023 on Kronos
(should be program #16 on Kronos because A is 0-7, B is 8-15, C-1 would be 16)
I am one happy camper now!!!!

Sorry for the error. Good to hear you got it working. I remember really struggling with MIDI stuff in the mid-to-late 80s. I had no one to ask for help; I didn't understand MIDI terms or what it was really. All I had was various manuals and guides, and a not-hugely-helpful book on MIDI borrowed from my local library, a few Keyboard magazines, and a calculator to convert decimal to hex. Through lots of trial & error, I got things to work. The hardest part probably was deciphering the MIDI Implementation charts.
No kidding!! I added keyboards to my live rig (primarily a guitarist) in '84 with a Jx-3p and a VK-9. Although the boards changed over the years, it's only recently that my live rig REQUIRED anything more than note on / note off midi messages. The kernel of info you gave me regarding registration changes from the Kronos to JP80 has opened up a HUGE door for me! I looked over the JP midi implementation novelette this morning and found where you got the info! All of a sudden a lightbulb went off and I feel I actually understand how to use most the info in this doc! A true AH HA moment. It only took me 30 years to ask the right question and get the right answer.HardSync wrote:Sorry for the error. Good to hear you got it working. Roland JP80 attempts to retain the same sound as long as you hold the chord, but the architecture doesn't completely allow it like the Kronos … my guess is that it runs out of voices and the effects don't carry over. Regardless of the reason it is NOT seamless.nicos wrote:One question:
when change registrations on the JP80, the sound changes smoothly like the Kronos, or cuts-off? or on other words when you have a sustained chord and change registration, the sound retains or cuts?
Thanks

I know this thread is old, but hopefully some of you are still around!
I have the same combo you mentioned here (Kronos 88 / Jupiter 80), and my question is MIDI related, so hopefully I am ok with the question, which is.....
Can the Jupiter be connected directly to the Kronos using a USB cable and not using the DIN 5 MIDI standard cables?
Thanks in advance.....
