Issues getting M50 to Record Midi

Post by babaracas »

Hi. Recent Mac convert. Here's my issue.

Equipment:
Korg M50
Macbook Pro, OSX 10.75
AKAI EIE Pro Interface

Problem:
I've installed the Korg midi driver and editor. When I add a track, the editor opens as an AUi instrument. It seems to synch fine, but I only get sound from the keys on the editor and not on the M50 itself (weird). When I go to record on the track, I get no midi input. The available inputs are "Keyboard" "Midi" "Virtual Midi Keyboard" and "All Midi Inputs," none of which result in any midi input from either the M50 or the M50 editor. I'm at a complete loss here. Could the driver not have installed somehow?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

My driver took about 6 attempts to install. It's got some strange bug in it.

Turning off local control seemed to help. Still very wonky though. I have a few questions/issues as I'm brand spanking when it comes to midi recording(sorry if these are obvious or basic):

-- When I switch to the sequencer on the M50, I get no MIDI input on the track. Is that a problem with the driver or something inherent to mixing Reaper with the M50 sequencer?
-- If I can't use the sequencer mode in the M50, and I can't have multiple instances of the M50 editor across tracks, how to I multitrack record? I tried this by selecting a specific channel input, but the M50 needs to be told somehow.

Other general questions:

-- Which DAW has the best/most intuitive MIDI editor?
-- Is there a DAW that works better with the M50 on OSX than Reaper (in others' experience)?

Thanks..

Check the MIDI channel numbers that you are transmitting to the M50. Then check the M50 to see what tracks are set to receive it on P3:Track Param - MIDI tab.

Thanks!

OK... I figured out most of my problem. I was always running the editor thinking I needed to to provide sound to the midi recording. You don't. So, now, I'm able to export a song as a MIDI file, drop it into Reaper and it plays back just fine when I have the M50 in sequencer.

Here are my next questions:

-- Is there any way to simply transfer songs recorded on the M50 directly into Reaper without first resorting to saving as MIDI file and transferring with the SD card, which is annoying?

-- When you are editing your song in Reaper, how do you add new tracks? I've tried this a few different ways, by pointing the input to the specific M50 track I'm recording, by adding a different track, etc, but each time, I get no input on Reaper.

Thanks, again, for helping the new and stupid.

I'm not familiar with Reaper so I can't say specifically how to add a track but the procedure should be similar to other DAW's. You would add one midi track in your DAW for each midi track on the the M50 that you want to record. Set each DAW track to the corresponding midi channel and play live or play back a recorded sequence on the M50 and it should record to the DAW.

It may be a little outdated, the info at this link helped me enormously. (I wish there was an update for the newer Reaper versions!!!)

Can't you just save it as a .mid file and import it into Reaper via USB?
