Transpose

Post by karmathanever »

Hi guys

Please allow for my being a bit of a newbie still (and a drummer  )....

Here's my ultimate "lazy playing" question..

I have just a couple of numbers I play where I have several key changes and would love a "transpose" control in those cases.
I realize that you can drop into GLOBAL and do it and even after searching these forums I just wondered if there's any way you can assign a pedal/control to effectively transpose the keyboard?

Yeah, I hear you all saying "what's a nice keyboard doing with a guy like this  ...." and "....learn to play in those keys...."
It's only a couple of numbers so I can live with it if necessary....

Thanks !!!

Cheers

Thanks ak - that's an interesting bit of gear!!!
I think nearly $200 is too much for a couple of numbers.

At worst I can always just use my PA3X as a MIDI controller for those songs....
Just thought that if it could be achieved on-board the Kronos it would be "nice and lazy"

Thanks for your response

You can transpose individual sounds and combis and save them. For programs, it will usually be somewhere in the oscillator/pitch page. For combis, it will be in the timbre parameters page.

Message from your typical misanthropic neighbor: ;)

If you happen to have an iPad, a camera connection set and a software like "MIDI Touch" (not written by me, for me or distributed by/for me etc.), you can create 25 Buttons (from -12..0..12) and let each send a MIDI SysEx message:

[F0 7F 00(up to 0F=MIDI channel) 04 04 00 34 F7] = -12
or [F0 7F 00 04 04 00 40 F7] = 0
or [F0 7F 00 04 04 00 4C F7] = +12

So the range is from 34..4C in hex digits.

It´s also in the Global.txt file and Midi implementation PDF on your Kronos disk.

Works in Prog,Combi,Global mode. At least that are the modes I just tested. This functionality will also be part of my Kronos support app. (+ and - buttons also), because you are not the first one to ask if this simple thing is possible. But it´s still in the works. Have to work harder. (This is not yet an advertisement!)

If you don´t have an iPad it´s of course not a cheap solution.

Sadly the nanoPad2 is not able to send SysEx or you could have used that. Would be nice to have Korg add that functionality.
And why the heck didn´t Korg include buttons for transpose on the Kronos/M3 surface anyway? Because it´s a workstation and not an Arranger? Why don´t we stop thinking in that obsolete categories?

Also depends on what which patch your trying to transpose. It is possible to route some tuning control to the control surface. I haven't tried for everything, but there is some possibility there.

Are you playing the keyboard live or working with a sequencing?

Create a Combi. transpose the Timber(s). save it to an empty location and give it a unique name such as the song name. and if you want you can put it in a set list and call it up from there. problem solved. I have done this many times when I've worked with different singers that sing the same songs but in different keys. some of them aren't worth the time it takes to learn the song in 2 different keys. by using the comby you can add Timbres and transpose them as you see fit.

Hi COSTIN C

Yes - that's what I do and have done with my Karma, M3 and now Kronos - was merely hoping that there might be a way of doing it just on the Kronos.

PA3X as your MIDI controller lets you completely control the Kronos (as an all-keys MIDI controller - PA3X in "SOUND" mode of course)
and also in STYLE mode you can (for example) use UPPER 1 sound as your KRONOS - then you can use transpose, octave up/down, ensemble, joysick etc.... - awesome!!!
I simply created a PA3X SOUND and called it "Kronos No Vol" - basically a SOUND which never plays on the PA3X (OSC LEVELS set to "0") - works a treat.
Just check your MIDI filtering on the PA3X and also the Kronos.
There is a glitch/bug (in the PA3X) where it sends a CC to toggle off MFX on the Kronos whenever you change a SOUND or mode on the PA3X - just be aware of that - this happens despite any MIDI filtering - you can easily set it back in Kronos GLOBAL mode.

Have fun - PA3X & Kronos - awesome combination!!!!!

Cheers
