Using Kronos with drumset

Post by Dbe4l »

Hi, I was wondering if it would be possible to use the Kronos to act as a trigger for an acoustic drumset, particularly the bass drum and snare for some dance music.

Thought was to connect the microphones near the bass drum and/or snare to the line ins on the kronos. And im wondering if there would be some way to set up the fx so that when the kick gets played it would go through some kind of noise gate or other effect that would go off if the decibels reach a certain level and then trigger one of the bass drum samples in the Kronos. Or maybe something with the audio in on the AL-1 engine?

I know its kind of a far fetched idea but thought id see if anyone had any thoughts on it. I know itd be much better to get actual drum triggers but not sure if our drummer will do that right now. If not, would there be any other effects that would work well to give the bass drum and snare a more traditional EDM sound? or would that all just be better done through the eq on teh mixing board? (I dont know much about how that stuff actually works though). It would only be for some of the songs on a live set so itd be nice if i could control it.

I have no idea if what you propose is possible. But I think a much easier and simpler approach would be to use something like an Alesis TriggerIO (a USB drum controller module), plug it into the Kronos as a MIDI controller, and attach triggers to your drums (or use electronic pads). Then all you have to do is set the channel/notes to whatever drum sounds you want to hear on the Kronos.

I have one of these myself and it works just fine with the Kronos.

Yeah i figured as much. If its less than 200 and we use it often enough, maybe i can just convince our drummer to get some pads. Or maybe I will when i can afford it.

Oh and I have another quick question as long as anyone see this so that i dont have to make another topic.

So if i download a midi file of a song off the internet, put it on the usb, and then load it into sequencer mode, how to i get it to have the correct corresponding gm insrtuments. Right now its just uses programs A-0 through A-127 and o have to go in and manually switch everything to be correct. There's an option called initialize GM initialize, but that doesnt seem to be doing it.

one other option for you would be the Alesis ControlPad. It's basically like a TriggerIO, but with built-in pads. It also has a couple trigger inputs as well (that you could use for a kick/hat pedal, for example). I have one of those too and it works great with the Kronos. You can actually find some great deals on both of these on Ebay.

Regarding your other question, I'm not sure there is an automatic way (if that's what you're asking). I'm probably not the best person to ask though, as I rarely use the internal sequencer these days and I've never actually tried to import a GM file.

I read that first question and I thought how can the Kronos ever trigger an acoustic drumkit :)
Thankfully, it started to make sense to me shortly after!
I don't think the Kronos does voltage to midi, which is what you need. Getting a second hand octapad and a footswitch might be a good option too, as it will actually prevent the acoustic kick and snare from sounding at the same time (or worse; a fraction earlier).

It would be pretty hard to process acoustic drums with a mic and keep them sounding decent IMO especially in a live setting, using triggers is the only real way to do this
