Hooking up TR61 to Logic
Hi
I have a TR61 and am trying to hook it up to Logic Pro so i can record it using the keyboard PLUS use its sounds controlled from Logic's sequencer.
Has anyone done this and how did you do it? have you perhaps got a Logic environment with the patch names ready installed?
Grateful for anything that points me in the right direction!

The USB connection will provide a virtual MIDI port for you to use the TR as a MIDI controller for sounds and softsynths that are on the computer.
If you want to record the sounds from the TR itself then you need to hook it's Main L & R outputs up to your audio interface, sound card, or similar.

Thanks xtrade, what i am really looking for is how to set up the midi configuration between TR and Logic. I have tried to follow the Logic manual but failed to get success. It is an awkward process far from plug and play, and so I hoped someone out there may have already built the 'environment' that logic needs to allow Midi control.

You don't necessarily have to build anything in the Environment. I'm using a TR61 plugged into a Lexicon Lambda USB interface and lately, a Samson Carbon 49 controller, because I use softsynths the most. When you add a track on the Arrange page, you can select External Instrument for a hardware synth. I can play the TR from the Carbon, but the better working method for me is to play the TR for its own sounds as audio (which feels better and less removed physically), or to let it play just one sound, such as a pad, assigned to one track. Once you have the section in-hand as MIDI data, you can reassign sounds and move it around as you please.
If you want the TR to act as a module that changes sounds on command, you are into Program & Bank Change message territory. Good luck with that!
I always found it maddening. I once ran 3 outboard modules from an 01Wfd and after much screaming and gnashing, I took to inserting program changes by hand, per channel in the sequencer. Laborious, but it worked readily. With Logic, all I have to do now is add a track and roll, one instrument per track.
I play almost everything by hand as if Logic was a giant tape deck, so the automation I apply lies mostly in repeating fader moves and real-time synth parameter modifications. I don't need to be conservative about routings now, because the playing field has improved so much. So it depends on how you work and what your goals are.
If you really want to do a Sorcerer's Apprentice trick and make outboard hardware change programs guided by Logic, join this:

Its an invaluable resource with many experts participating. If you want guidance on things like the Environment, go there and look around. Its a bouquet of good fixes.

Thanks HPH24 that is useful. Hitherto i had been using logic as a tape deck to, but want manual playing is not up to scratch and want to use TR as a module. I have followed the method in the logic manual but cannot get it to work (maddening as you say!) and so i was hoping someone might be able to send me the finished article as a an environment package. I will follow your link, and see where that gets me, thanks again.
You won't really get full multitimbral operation with all the effects and everything with the TR as a MIDI device.
Because the TR is an environment to itself, the two directions I found to work best were:
A. Record single MIDI tracks for sequencing and then re-record them as audio to 'freeze' it. Simply take note of which program or combi you used in case you need to revisit it in the future, mute or otherwise disable the MIDI track once the audio is recorded.
B. send multitimbral MIDI to the TR and set up your own timbres, effects routing and mixing etc within in TR. it is quite complex and self-contained. If you do this in sequencer mode then you can save the 'song' (essentially a sequence without any MIDI data recorded) onto the media card to load up later when you return to the project. You could also however do it in a combi and simply save it to a free slot on the machine, with a few different limitations..
When you are finished you will still need to record the audio result into Logic in order to bounce down the project to burn to CD or whatever.
These techniques will also work with pretty much any synthesizer. A. Even works with monotimbral synths.

Yes, the TR has a severe limitation where effects are concerned, but that's part of why I eventually went for a DAW after I saw that lack in the 01Wfd. Its far less of an issue if you can afford a Kronos;). I also got tired of squinting at such a small GUI. Its a crisp one that works fine, but a DAW is vastly more eye-friendly.
If you really want to use the TR for several sequenced voices, run them dry and effect them in your DAW. If a host sound depends heavily on the internal FX, freeze or sample it. In fact, I bought Autosampler and preserved a lot of Korg sounds for use in Logic's EXS24 sampler. Effect assignment issues are a thing of the past when you have a convo reverb and enough CPU for inserts as well as Sends. Having both the dry sound and the original heavily effected one a single click apart is an added plus.
The TR *is* a full workstation, but more for notation and sketch-pad work than final productions. It bought it for its Triton heritage as a sound source, not a DAW, so I'm still quite happy with it. It has several signature sounds that defy sampling, too. Its far more immediate and fluid to play them from the TR. Welcome to the world of viable hybrid approaches.
