Tilt Screen for Kronos

Post by lotty1 »

Just wondered as Kronos gets older and out of warranty how easy it would be to tilt the Kronos screen.
Because I will never sell my Kronos but out of warranty I am prepared to do major modifications.
If necessary buy a nonworking Kronos just for the case and modify it.
Cannot understand why korg did not do this in the first place.
This would not happen until Kronos is out of warranty and spares are cheap.
The non tilting screen is a pain.

You asked why korg did not add a tilt screen and $$$ is the answer.

If you are successful with a hardware mod of that complexity , let the forum know

Perhaps more complicated, but (IMO) less potentially destructive would be to port the UI from the touch screen to something like an iPad and use that as a control surface as it were. Not all of the elements of the Kronos UI can be represented with something as generic as MidiDesigner so some work would be required.

Heck, I may be crazy dreaming here, but it would be nice if the industry came up with a wifi standard, with API that was open and utilized something similar to MIDI/sysex. Then there could be a new niche for tablet based control surfaces / editors that could bridge between compliant DAWs and Workstations interchangeably.

Then you could tilt that iPad/tablet/thingy however the heck you liked. Best of all it'd probably help out all the folk complaining that the Kronos fonts are too small and you wouldn't have to do hardware surgery.

This is actually very doable and it's also something you could easy undo. You don't have alter the actual body of the KRONOS at all. If you look at how the screen is installed in the KRONOS from the inside, it's rather accessible, and with a little engineering it is possible to make a tillable screen for the KRONOS that would slip into the same slot and be mountable from the same holes.

That's the idea. That is what I'm going to do once kronos is out of warranty.
I sure that I would never sell my Kronos so might as well customize it how I like.

What is the collective knowledge about the TouchView display? I tried searching on here and didn't find any specifics other than it connects to the Com1 serial port on the mobo. TouchView is a Korg trademark in USA, but I see it on other devices like Canon copiers. Is the screen a Korg proprietary design? If not, what are the specs/protocols involved with it?

Oh that'd be cool to have that protocol.. The computer I'm using with my Kronos is a 25" HP TouchSmart iq816 and it would be nice to be able to scale up the Kronos UI on that display.
The editor sort of works to do that, but with its fixed sized window is just about the same size as the actual Kronos display so doesn't give me much in that regard.
I'm just about to put the HP computer on a swivel mount in front of the Kronos so I could have it hovering casually tilted above the K and to have the Kronos touch screen in a realizable window would be nice. Even though it would just be pixel scaling, my fingers are just too fat for some of the buttons and the stylus is kind of a hassle too.

Surely it would be relatively easy to port the touchscreen controls to iPad, so, although it wouldn't be the new, good editor we all want, at least it would be bigger, and you could set it up physically how it suited you. Just a simple connection into the back.

Is it not possible to disconnect the Kronos screen and connect the cables to an external/bigger touch screen?

It was on the OASYS, but apparently it's not on the KRONOS. The OASYS was running off the VGA, KRONOS is not.

For what it's worth.
The Editor running on a Windows Tablet PC is pretty darn close to having a detachable screen you can put and tilt any way you like.

The Editor runs great on my ACER W500.
