System crash / bug in Sampling

Post by domc »

Ahhhh - almost 6 hours of meticulously sampling drum sounds and labelling them all yesterday - wasted with a crash. Very frustrating as I've had 6 years with the Oasys and no problems and then this with the Kronos after 4 months.

I'm sure it must be related to a bug I seemed to be experiencing often in sampling.
I'd record a long sample of say 30 different Stereo drum hits and then use the 'Time Slice' function to create individual samples. Within Time Slice I'd have to use the 'Link' command a lot for the non clean hits (e.g. for some chime type sounds) where the algorithm assigned many separate slices to the same sound. However after using 'link' a few times, I often found that the left and right stereo pairs became misaligned for some reason - and a key would not play the same sample for a note (e.g. it would play the left hand one of one key and the right hand one of an adjacent key). Sometimes it seemed to correct itself if I played lots of different keys - othertimes it didn't - but a workaround that always seemed to work was to save to a program, exit time slice, re-enter time slice - and the algorithm remembered your previous linked time slices and the misalignment was gone.

However towards the end of the night I was working on a particularly complicated one, which needed lots of links, I think I also has to do one 'Split' as I was too eager with hitting link. The samples had become misaligned with each other - and them with no warning BAM! System reboot - all my multisamples (other than one which I previously saved) gone. Halfway through booting it crashed again and I got an error message on reboot saying some kind of system error and to remove all USB devices - and then I had to 'hard' restart it again - it did boot properly but obviously with everything lost.

The Kronos was connected to a mac and being used as the soundcard effectively for 'Live 8' at the time - but not in VST mode - i.e. the editor was not open.

Very frustrated, Domc

PS and while I'm in a moaning mood - the one function i thought "Great - the editor will be really useful - I can edit all those sample names on a computer rather than using the tedious keyboard on the Kronos screen". But no - nothing on sampling is supported on the editor - where it would make a real difference for editing names. WHY?
