MPC 1000 + Korg Kaoss Pro

Post by CeeHigh »

Basically I've got a drum track playing on my MPC 1000 at 4/8 Time Sig and the tempo is set at 42. I also have the sequence set to loop continuously.

Now I've been looking at live effect machines to use live and I really like the Kaossilator Pro and its sounds, so Im wondering 2 things about the it...

1) How long can the loop be set on the Kaoss Pro? (Would I be able to record a loop on the Kaoss Pro and then overdub it to add an effect in realtime and still have it perfectly looping in-time?

2) How would I be able to match/sync the tempo of both machines to loop and stop/playback at the same time?

Im thinking MIDI, but Im not entirely sure. The MPC 1000 has got 2 Midi In's. Im using its Midi In 1 to record the data from my MPK25.....so If I midi up the Kaoss Pro and MPC 1000, would this allow me to keep everything in sync?

Yes. Just pick whichever one you'd like to be the MASTER CLOCK for your tempo and make sure your other components are using EXTERNAL CLOCK (wording may differ) and are wired to recieve the MIDI signal from the master clock device. MIDI's the best way to keep everything synched, and even lets you start/stop, and even control parameters on one piece of gear using the pots on another. Hope this helps.

Well the clocks will be synched, but if it's anything like my KP3, you'll have to be tight on the phrase recording. If it's during a live set and you don't have to stop/start the loop it'll be seemless, But if you have to power down the unit and restart it you'll have to have made sure you got the loop start point correct. The loop will continue "playing" to the clock even when it's muted, so it'll keep it's sync once it's going. Generally If you've got a decent sense of rhythm and know where your loop begins I wouldn't worry about it. Even if you mess up it'll still be in tempo and never drift.

Simply put, it won't drift at all with MIDI clock synch, but you just have to make sure you start recording the KPPro loop accurately.

Also, i think it can loop for 4 bars. My KP3 maxes at "16" but it turns out to be 4 bars on my Electribes. It must be counting the number of "beats" (4/4 time signiture).

ok, that'd be great if that is the case. I got the impression from other posts that the looping audio can drift off of the midi clock. So if I for example, run KPro's midi clock out to a Dr. Beats metronome so another musician (drummer) can have his own click that is synced to the KPro the downbeats of the metronome and the KPro will stay synced? and so as long as I'm accurate in my triggering when making loops, the audio loops will stay in sync?

Thanks
