Kaossilator or Microkorg?

Post by loljk »

I am considering buying one of the two.
I already own a kp3.
Please give some reasoning behind your ideas :)

They are both fairly capable machines, but with completely different purposes.

If you have no idea about music or playing keys, and have no desire to learn, or just want to be different and have fun with it, then go for the Kaossillator.

If you want to play keys and know which notes to hit when (or at least a desire to learn), and also to create and tweak your own sounds, then go for the microKorg (or even better, one of Korg's later synths like the R3).

By the way, I'm not trying to make out the KO is a 'toy'. It is very toy-like, and often very fun to play with 'instant gratification', whilst keys can make you work harder, but are often infinitely more rewarding. Neither of those is a bad thing, it just depends on what you'd prefer to do.

X-Trade pretty much nailed it. But I will say that the most creative Korg users are posting their stuff on Youtube. I quick search for either the microkorg or the kaossilator will yeild tons of results, and you can really see how people are implementing their own creativity and maybe give you a better idea of which one fits your style.

micoKORG is a synth and the K Pro is your KP3 with sounds innnit.

Please give some reasoning behind your ideas

Pro microKORG:
1. Has a great set of sounds
2. Plays all sound banks of MS2000 (many, many, many sounds available on the internet)
3. Small unit that fits well on desks and even on top other synths.
4. Soft Editor is easy to use although it aint the prettiest thing.
5. Programmable synthesizer means extended usefulness
6. Worth the penny.

Cons microKORG:
1. Sounds are somewhat...too popular and used in a lot of music.
2. On-unit grid matrix can be confusing to those who are used to much more knobbage on their programming/tweak-able synths.
3. Limited voicing, no sequencer or drums. Comes up a little short in the spec department compared to the similarly pitched Alesis micron.
4. Keys are micro-sized so chubby fingers will mush-many-keys.

Pro Kaossilator Pro:
1. Easy to create interesting and new melodies in a novel way.
2. great sound set of (200) programs, including some drum sets!
3. On board sequencer with 4 tracks or loop playing banks.
4. USB and Soft Editor for DATA transfer.
5. Can be used to control other devices through MIDI.
6. Is a blast to play.

Cons Kaossilator Pro:
1. No synth engine, so the 200 sounds is it....forever.
2. Sequencer doesn't sync like most products with MIDI implementation.
3. Can't play the K Pro with MIDI boards.
4. Can't manipulate imported samples.
5. No chopping of loops, only straight playback.
