Midi question - EMX-1

Just wondering if I can play a pattern on the electribe(by manually hitting the play button on the unit itself) while running automation on the cutoff from my DAW via MIDI/USB. I'd try it out on my own, but my electribes at home for the next three weeks...
So I'm wondering if, by using the MIDI to control the cutoff, the step-sequenced pattern in my electribe will be conflicted by the non-existence of a step-sequenced pattern in the DAW. i.e. the automation works fine, but my pattern doesn't play at all.
