Creating Dubstep Wobble Bass on ESX1

Post by mudlogger »

Hi there - this may have been written about before - so apologies if it has. This is how i create a wobble bass use a lame - 1 shot bass sample.

1. Change your valves if you haven't already or your bass may not wobble good!
2. Find a standard low bass one shot sample (organ sounds are good) - keep it very short - its going to be looped anyway.
3. Goto SAMPLE - loop it - from start to finish. Its important that the sample is looped - a one shot won't wobble!
4. Assign your new looped bass sample to KEYBOARD PART also keyboard button lit.
5. transpose up/down on the keyboard using <and> arrows to find the right octave that sounds bassy! In my case the octave was 5.

Switch the FX on first as you'll find it easier to find the wobble, otherwise everything just sounds dull and flat.

FX SEND - yes - FX1
Distortion
FX Edit 1 - 5 o'clock - full to right
FX Edit 2 - 2 o'clock
FX Chain - OFF

Part Common
Pitch/Glide = 9 o'clock
EG Time = 7 o'clock - full left
Start Point = 7 o'clock - full left
AMP EG = N (second light nearest AMP EG button) not ^ (first light)
Pan = 12 o'clock

Modulation
Speed = 1 o'clock
Depth = 1:30 o'clock
Type = ^^ (saw wave) not BPM sync
Dest = Pan - don't use pitch or cutoff

Filter - this is were its at.
Cutoff = 9 o'clock (there is a sharp cutoff point just before @9'oclock)
Resonance = 3 o'clock
EG INT = 12 o'clock
Type = LBF

To find the sweet spot for the wobble - adjust cutoff / resonance. The key for me is the cutoff - there is a real small margin just before 9 o'clock.

Thats it!

Nice write up.

Anyone looking for a great dubstep maching should try an EMX. The LFO is perfect for wobble and the synth engine can make some ripping bass tones.
I've got some examples on my soundcloud page of live LFO tweaking dubstep madness.
Drum and Bass, Downtempo, ElectroPop, Industrial, Dubstep
RM1x / EMX-1 / Korg Triton Rack / Korg Prophecy
