Take a survey about the usage of Keyboard Workstations
Dear keyboard workstation users,
I'm a student of multimedia technology (HTWK Leipzig, Germany) and i'm currently working on my diploma thesis on the usage of Keyboard Workstations (e.g. Korg M 3, Roland Fantom, Yamaha Motif – no entertainer workstations like Yamaha Tyros).
My focus is on the typical musical areas the workstations are being played (Stage/Studio), how people make music with workstations, what the most important features are and how the future of workstations could look like. So it makes no difference whether you're a keyboard player in a pop-band or a hip-hop producer, everyone's welcome.
For this reason i have created a survey, which will take up only 5 min of your time. As a gratification there is the chance to win a $100 Voucher for amazon.com. You will have the option to leave your email-adress at the end of the survey. This will be used exlusively to pick a lucky winner for the voucher. All data will be treated anonymously.
So if you are using or have been using a keyboard workstation, here's the link to the survey:
http://www.kwiksurveys.com/online-surve ... I_ec1dc2aa
The survey will be online for about 3 Weeks. Feel free to forward this link to any workstation users you know.
Thank you very much for taking the survey!
Johannes

Done. I found that very interesting actually as I'm designing and building a synthesiser for my final year project at the moment and I'll be needing to do something similar.

Pretty good survey, all good questions. But I'm surprised at the evident prejudice against pro level arranger workstations eg Pa2x and that there was no discussion about key differentiators e.g. Karma in a workstation. These are all great facilities to use when playing and improvising live. Also what about the type of keybed people want to use in studio and playing live?

Rob

Rob,
You have a good point, but please note that only KORG top arrangers are workstation as well. None of the other arrangers (YAMAHA TYROS, ROLAND G..) workstation as well.
I say this because what makes a keyboard synthesizer a workstation is the sequencer. Only KORG PA series has sequencer that is on par with a true workstation based sequencer. It offers the same major editing/recording features as the workstation. This is not true for Yamaha or Roland arrangers.
This is why I think that 'all' arrangers are not workstations.

Shakil,
Yes I agree that a "workstation" should provide facilities to edit/create sounds using samples, to sequence multi-tracks of music etc.
There are many pro-featured "arrangers" that fall in that category not just the Korg Pa2x, Pa800. e.g. the Tyros 2 and Tyros 3 also have sequencer and sampling and also HD recording capabilities.
Best regards,
Rob

Rob,
Have you tried the Tyros 2 and Tyros 3 sequecer? It's the similar to as PSR2000, not Motif. That was my point, KORG PA series is the only arranger that has real 16 tracks sequencer similar to workstation keyboards. On Korg PA, I can either use styles, record my performance to tracks from styles, or record each note on 16 MIDI tracks in real time, with ability to mix, punch in, rerecord, retake, edit, AND make own sounds like a synthesizer...... You can't do this on TYROS sequencer. You can't even record another take on a track, because it deletes the sounds. Please try the Tyros sequencer, you will see what I mean.
Anyway, I have submitted the survey.
