Adding keyboard realestate with a midi controller

Post by Kyobanim »

I just saw this post by Martin Ocando in another thread:
I try not to change a sound in the middle of a song. That is why I got a 49 key MIDI controller so I can have more keyboard real state to split my sounds.
Does this mean I can add a controller to my setup and assign sounds from a combi to be played on it in conjunction to what I am doing on the m50?

I noticed, while setting up a combi, that there are assignments listed as INT and EXT and have been wondering about this.

INT means that your soundsource is the INTernal sound engine of the M50 EXT and EXT2 means that your sound source is something EXTernal such as a soundmodule that you control with your M50... so if you want to use M50 sounds with an external controller you should put this to INT because you're using M50s sounds. In one combi you should put the sounds you want to control with M50 to Global Midi Channel (Gch) and the sounds you want to control with external controller for some other channel (make sure that your controller is on some other channel than the global midi channel on the M50 (normally ch 1) and setup the sounds that you want to control with additional controller to same channel as the controller (channel 2 might be the obvious selection))

Exactly. I set up a combi with several sounds, then I assign 01G MIDI channel to the sounds I want to play with the M50 keybed. And 02 MIDI channel to the sounds I want to play with the controller. Then set up the controller to play on midi channel 02 and presto. 61+49 keys for my combi.

Althought, if you use and expression or damper pedals they won't respond to the controller. I just purchased (waiting for arrival) a Behringer FCV100 volume pedal, which controls the whole volume line (not just the expression modulation), so it will modify the volume of the whole combi, not just the sounds coming out of the M50.
