Can I trigger samples using foot controller?

Im pathetically new to midi. I have a roland pk-5a foot controller plugged into the micro sampler. It works as an extension to the keyboard just fine. But when I switch to sample mode the footswitch still plays keyboard notes.

Is it possible to trigger samples (and use tap tempo) with a foot controller or am I barking up the wrong tree and should have bought Ableton!

Help me because Im stupid...
