NanoKeys - Sound without computer?

Post by Audiomaniac »

Hi. I know that the nanokey is simply a midi controller, but i'd rather not have to put it through my computer, and then out to an amp to get sound. I was wondering if there was some sort of device that i could plug the nanokeys into that gives it samples/ sound, and then run that out to an amp. Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Thanks :)

hi, i think you pretty much answered your own question in as much that the nano series are just midi controllers and are exclusive to use with a pc or mac. since they are both bus powered and don't have have any conventional midi connections, you can't do what you suggested with them..

Thanks Smash. I've figured out that by connected the nanokey to a powered USB hub, it will power the keyboard. I just need a way to go from USB to MIDI now. Most of the USB MIDI converters need the USB end to be connected to a computer. Are there any converters where the USB end is at the keyboard?

The only converter is your computer. The nanoKeys requires Korg drivers in order for your computer to do anything sensible with it. Without those drivers, no other device is going to make any sense out of the bytes of data sent from the nanoKey elsewhere. The nanoKeys may not even be sending standard MIDI data to the computer; it could send something else that the drivers interpret as MIDI data.

Connecting it to your hub powers the keyboard, but there's still nothing that will know what to do with the data from the keyboard besides your computer.
