FILTER!!

Hey guys this might be a dumb question but.... I play alot of prog rock and my lead sounds have been soundsing very dull becuase there is no expression to them. I want to add filter to my lead sounds but I do not know or understand what Filter can do to help with my lead sound. Can someone please help me. For example it would be cool of I can have squeal type of effect as I push my joystick to -y. I really need help thank you

Look under Classic Threads and read the one name Programming A Filter Sweep (I think). I just was looking at it, but am too lazy to go find it for you.
