I am forever removing sticks from the pa800 to the computer and visa versa and am at present turning the keyboard off to do so.
Do I really have have to do this as it is a real pain.

I didn't even know you had too. I have never done this, I just checked the manual and it makes no reference for a requirement to turn the device off. When plugging and unplugging the stick you get a message flash up on the screen which is perfectly normally and just indicates the PA800 is perfectly capable of handling the situation.
Obviously you need to be careful not to do this while the device is being written too. But it is not the same as a PC where you need to eject the device through the OS before you can disconnect it, this is purely because PC's sometimes cache data and so may have not finished writing all the data even though the application itself thinks it has finished.
Paul.
