Headphones advice PA5X

Post by F-Minor »

Any advice for good headphones for PA5X? They need to be closed and over-ear. There are so many to choose from… Please share good experiences so I can make a shortlist. Thank you!

Hi,
Have a look at the Sony WH-1000XM range (3,4 &5). I have the 3's and the noise cancelling is excellent with a good audio quality.

"Beyerdynamic DT 700 Pro X" or "AKG 371" both models are good closed back headphones that won't break the bank...

I have a few pairs of AKG 371 for when I have company in the studio, and I also have Beyerdynamic DT 900 Pro X which are open back (very good indeed) so I would expect the DT 700 Pro X be of a high standard.

I have a pair of closed cup over the ear Sennheiser HD280N pro, which I’ve owned for nearly 20 years! They are still widely available to buy. The sound is amazing. I’ve only ever had to change the ear cups and head band once and they are as good as new. They work brilliantly on the KORG pa5x and Yamaha Genos.
Current keyboards; KORG PA5X 61 key, Yamaha Genos 76 key. King KORG.
Previously; Yamaha Tyros 3, 4, and 5 (61 to 76 key)

Hi, I'm using a "Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 250 Ohm" since 15 years with my Korg PA keyboards up to Pa5X, Mackie Big Knob and several Audio interfaces.
It still works perfect for me. The ear pads are very soft and allow hours of continous working. It is still available for a fair price and ear pads are available as spare parts too.

I suggest 2 of relative budget :
- Sennheiser Momentum 4
, all in one , medium ANC but with totally perfect sound signature and stage imaging that compete the world's best.
- The classic AKG K371 the best of lower cost closed over ears headphones.

Keyboards : Steinway-D, Kronos X, Pa5X 76, Pa4X 76, Montage M7 , Roland-XV88, Emu3,Emax II, Synclavier II , Yamaha DX Series, ΟΒ-8V

I need a reliable headphone to edit my set (Style play mode) that get close to live performance with Pa system.
I do all my style editing with headphone at home but when I am on stage it's not exactly the same.

I am aware of difference but since I can't edit with the Pa system in the club where I perform,
that's why I need a reliable headphone that gets close to what I hear in live.

Which one of your those suggested headphone do you recommend in my case?
- Sennheiser Momentum 4
- AKG K371

Thanks

It depends of what kind of headphones you prefer , open , semi closed or closed , I always prefer closed headphones.
Almost all above mentioned are suitable for your job since you deal with 16b sampling bit rate of Korg format.

If you deal with Pro Studio mix and Hi-end audio files of over 92 sampling bit rate and you want extra features then
Sennheiser Momentum 4 or Sennheiser HD 660S2 or Focal Clear MG Pro (if you can afford it) is your solution.

The Korg PA5X Quick Guide says: You can use headphones with an impedance of 16-200 Ohms (50 Ohms suggested). So 250 ohms seems too high. Is it important to be very precise about this? I'm not very tech savvy, so I honestly have no idea what impedance does. I think I'll look for headphones with Korg's suggested impedance of 50 just to be safe.

Some of the headphones mentioned in this thread are wireless/with wireless option. I don't want that, because it is a no go to play wirelessly with a keyboard (because of latency), I was told. The headphones I'm going to buy will only be used for the keyboard, so paying for a wireless option that I'll never use doesn't make sense to me.

On my shortlist now:
BeyerDynamic DT 700 PRO X (48 Ohm)
Beyerdynamic DT-770 Pro 80 Ohm
Sennheiser HD-300 PROtect or just the PRO (both 64 Ohm)
Yamaha HPH-MT7 (49 Ohm)

Which one would you pick? :-) I lean towards the BeyerDynamics...

I've seen a few more, but not all of them are in stock at the supplier I usually use.

- it is a no go to play wirelessly with a keyboard (because of latency)
- When you listen to 1mV from earphones output with an 80 Ohm headphones set then using one 200 Ohm headphone set you need 2mV
of output signal due to listen to the same volume , but low impedance earphones have more distortion and less frequencies linearity than
200 Ohm , that's why Hi-End and expensive earphones meet that standards and are driven by earphone pre-amps , but IMO a closed type
of headphones of 200 Ohm is loud enough for Pa5X earphones output.

- Bluetooth wireless cheap systems have large latency , UHF transmission of expensive headphones have the same latency of an expensive
sound card so never purchase blue tooth wireless systems for real time audio , especially sound speakers !
