Combi button on Korg M1 broken

Post by stu frye »

I am not a programmer. My Korg M1 button to switch to Combi mode pushed into the body of the keyboard and won't work now. Is there another way without connecting MIDI to switch to combi mode and back to program with the remaining buttons on the device iteself?

No, you are going to have to get you synth repaired. You might be able to do something about it yourself by opening up the case and having a look at what has happened. I *think* there is a daughter board that the buttons sit above, I can't remember, but it that is the case, hopefully it's just loosened and fallen away. Worst case is you've cracked a board. Another thing to be aware of is those buttons are known for failing in time. Again I can't remember exactly but I think it's the carbon on the back of the membrane that wears out. I remember on mine starting to push harder and harder on the sequencer button until I realised if I gave it a mash at the sametime as pushing it would work without having to push so hard, but in the end that technique started to not work. So off to the repair shop.
Stuff I'm using: Umm right now, well there's a Volca Drum, a Micro Freak, an ADX-1, a Pulse, a Blofeld, a UNO Drum, KeyStep/Beatstep Pro/Keystep Pro (one of each), a Circuit, a LiveTrak L-12 and this nonsense: The Brief-case as it was about a bit over a year ago (the the complete ridiculous GAS monster collection here)and here

Combi button on Korg M1 broken

This is the tactile switch for a M1 if need be:

This is how the 'knobs' look (afaik there are groups of 2, 3 and 4). Just for reference - sold out on bustedgear!

Ah thank you, nice to know the aren't that membrane type button. Dunno why I didn't try to look for any images of the naked synth before, but found this from going through the site you have linked to: http://bustedgear.com/repair_Korg_M1_buttons_5.html It helped understand why the numpad buttons can end up tilted.
I also found this video that shows how to repair the buttons: https://youtu.be/80nphIpkiwU
