Restore and upgrade Kronos X to Kronos 2

Post by massca »

Hello friends,
I am an old member of this fantastic forum and new happy Kronos user. I would have liked to buy it since the first model was presented, I finally bought a used Kronos X 73 in perfect condition. It is a wonderful keyboard, I'm really happy!

Although not indispensable I would like to have the configuration of sounds (programs, samples, etc) as close as possible to that of a new K2.

Looking for the forum I understand that this should be the procedure to make a complete factory reset.
1. Backup everything on an external media
2. Download latest version of Restore DVDs from Korg site
3. Connect an USB DVD player to restore the Kronos HD content using Restore DVDs
4. Update the OS to the latest version

After this I need to purchase and install the "New KRONOS Sound Pack".

I'd like to know if I forgot something important, and if at the end there will be some significant difference in the configuration with a new K2.

Cheers

I think you are 99% there. I vaguely recall some free Programs/Samples that Korg included or offered via free D/L for the K2. Maybe google for that detail

As far as I know, all you need to do is update your OS, purchase and download the New Kronos EXS Soundpack from Korg. Its the first time I've heard of having to use the restore DVD's that ship with a new Kronos 2. I don't think the K2 restore disks are compatible with the KX. There are definitely differences in firmware between the 2 machines. Do let us know if it's successful.

GregC, narf,
thank you for your answers.

Before to install the K2 EXs, I want to use the restore DVDs to be wipe all the changes that previous owner did.

I'm not sure that using K2 DVDs will be successful, it depends if the Korg made them compatible with KX. Otherwise I need to pay the Megasync service and download the ones made for the KX.
I'll keep you informed.

Just go to the factory folder and load the preload PCG. Also, initialize unwanted program and Combi banks. The DVD rescue disks are really a last resort if the Kronos fails to boot.

You are correct. There is absolutely no need to use the DVD rescue disks. It is simply a reconfiguration of the program slots which can be done by loading the PCG.

Thank you for your suggestion. I know the preload PCG procedure but I have two concerns about using it. If I remember well it doesn't restore the user banks, only the internal ones.

Furthermore, my preload file is very old, about 2012 (I don't have my KX here). I wonder if the K2 programs and combis are exactly the same than original K/KX, I mean the ones with the same name.

Maybe I'm thinkin too much about this details :-)

You plan on purchasing the New Kronos Sound Pack. It includes the new sample libraries in EXS-17 & 18. It also includes all the new programs that ship with the K2. These are in KRS-07.

I looked at the new Preload.PCG file on my original Kronos (I purchased the New Kronos Sound Pack) and it includes program banks I-A thru I-F, and User banks U-A thru U-BB. The remaining user banks are left empty, which is normal.

The important thing is that your Kronos needs to be at OS 3.0.2 or later. You'd probably want to get it to the latest version, at least eventually. Yes, backup everything, but really all that needs to happen is your OS needs to be updated and then the New Kronos Sound Pack installed. It is possible to run the two EXS sample libraries in demo mode, but it is not possible to get a demo version of KRS-07. That must be purchased.

Hope this makes sense.

Thank you very much Busch. My KX is already on latest OS, so I only need to buy the New Kronos Sound Pack to have all the new programs. I'll do next week when I'll back from my holidays.

Hi Woomgoog, yes it is possible to upgrade original Kronos to latest OS. If you have some experience with computers it is very easy.

You need to download “KRONOS/System Updater” (v. 3.1.2) file here: http://www.korg.com/us/support/download ... /424/1514/

Detailed step by step instructions are in the “Updating the System” paragraph in the “KRONOS/Update and Restore (English)” manual: http://www.korg.com/us/support/download ... /424/2013/

I didn’t search for a tutorial on YouTube but is very likely that someone did it.
I hope this can help you.

So you`ve update your KX to 3.1.4? I`m new to the forum and I was searching on how to do that I own a Kronos 73 first edition. Does anyone know if its possible to update to 3.1.4? Is there any tutorial on how to do it? Thanks
There AIN'T NO 3.1.4- LATEST OS is 3.1.2. Please go to Korg.com/Kronos and search it out yourself.
