What string patch is this?

Post by swarupmahapatra »

Hi Guys,

I was just listening to this song and there is a string patch being played throughout the song. Especially at 1:52.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yl8R4gvVMkg

I am curios if this string patch is there in Kronos or how can it be created in Kronos? Any ideas?

Thanks

look into the time period and into late charanjit singh and his synths. He was the go to synth guy (session player) at that period for a long time and has likely played most of the songs.

also note that the sounds on records (especially 80's) are bit processed. for the front strings try combining a gritty violin will mellotron strings with a exciter and decimator on top and some eq should get you in the ballpark. or use al-1 syth strings with little bit of noise mixed in.

the background sound like basic synth strings so you can use one of the presets or just make on in polysix. Charanjit singh ji mostly used roland gear, and Jupiter-8 on most of commercial tracks, along with tb-303 and tb-808 for most of his acid/experimental stuff.

Thank you so much Amit!! I do appreciate your response.

I just googled about late Charanjit singh ji and found out some great details about him and his creations. I never knew about this. The fact is being in US, it is very difficult to know about the Indian keyboardists or synth players or how they play and their techniques. You can find lots of info about western keyboardists and playing styles through google though.

I used to do some playing by ear for fun when I was back in India. Then I got some formal piano training after coming to US. But I am not able to find someone who can guide me through Indian music yet. Currently I play in a Bollywood cover band and recently I am doing some research about the Indian Ragas and playing them on keyboard.

Your response is very informative in deed. Thank you so much again for that. Please share more info about Indian keyboardists and Indian synthesizing.

Regards

If it interests you Take a Listen to The album :
Synthesizing 10 ragas to Disco Beat by Charanjit Singh Ji.
He did this back in 1982. Very Acidic Basslines and Trippy grooves.

Sounds like real strings to me. As well as some real brass.

yes, but knowing Bhappi lahiri (producer/Music director) it's very unlikely.
He was very much (or way too much) influenced by euro synthpop around that time (avva avva song, from this same movie was a lift off of video killed the radio star) and this same string patch can be heard on lot of his stuff from that period. He also sung this and a lot of other songs himself and was considered one of the most budget friendly producers for low budget films.

Some of the Other Well Known/Established Music Directors like Laxmikant/Pyarelal, Shankar/Jaikishen or Kalyan Ji/Anandji used to use Scoring Orchestra with Full strings sections and live recordings.

Here are two quickie patches: https://www.dropbox.com/s/cxemujqri8775 ... s.PCG?dl=0

Need Tweaking as per use, but these will get you in ball park of some of old songs (try changing sampling freq in decimator).

Also try ensemble or other ifx for more variations. and play with amp attack curves for more of a drag.

Had been wanting to do these anyways, Just tried these with few of his Songs

Tumhara Pyar Chahiye,
Tu mujhe jaan se pyara hai,
Yaad Aaa raha hai..

~enjoy!

a PCG file is Korg Format Collection.
It can contain, programs, combis, wave seq etc.
The Attached file you will nedd to put on a usb and then load it from kronos disk mode.

There are only two patches in this for Program Bank U-G 00 and U-G 01. and you can load them to a different empty location, otherwise when you load it will overwrite your U-G bank.
