Korg Pa4X sound

I must say that our Pa4X is a bit forward with the sound quality.
New guitars, drums nicer.
Pa4X sounds more rock style.
I am sending some samples that I recorded.

Thanks KP for recording and posting. After the Pa3X, I was hoping the Pa4X would have a greater selection and more usable rock styles/patterns. Sounds like it's improved in that direction. How does the total number of Rock style options compare to the total number Rock options in tee Pa3X? Any increase in variety? Or just a revision to better quality Rock styles? Thanks. Hal

Nope...

Not even the samples in the Kronos are 24 bit, and to be honest, i think having 24 bit samples, would not add much, as the samples are still trigered by 7 bit midi vallues...

However having a 24 bit DAC would be nice... Your mix would improve when mixing loud solo instruments with with minor background sounds, the softly played piano in the background could still have 16 bits depth

Actually, the DACs in Pa4X do are 24 bit. Not only that, but we were very careful at choosing something that sounded very musical. In fact, the Burr-Browns we use are often found in high-end hi-fi devices.

The same applies to the ADCs, also Burr-Browns with high-end studio specifications. Many of our customers are professional entertainers, so their voice is as important as the sounds generated by the internal sound generator.

Thank you Paolo, may i asume these are the same, or comparable to the burr-browns used in the Kronos?

Oh, there is so much MaxxBass and MaxxEQ, it sounds very bad.

As for DA converters, well Korg has other problems, DA was never that problematic.
Their biggest problem is with their ROM, there is so much limiting applied to all samples that ROM has almost 6db higher RMS than those on other keyboards, that is why it sounds squashed, thin and hollow.

Every time I want to make my own samples and multisamples I need to use limiter to squash them just to make them loud as ROM ones.
Fortunately I have some other tricks now to make them loud without killing all sound quality with limiting, but that is just me.

That you are asking means you can't tell... So why does it matter?

Every single CD you have listened to for the last 30+ years is 16 bit... So is the gear they used (or 8-12bit in the 80's!) until the last decade or so. Music certainly has got no 'better' since the move to 24bit, has it?

I agree that the Maxx on those demos has been a fair bit overcooked, though!

Are they stock styles, no user playing? Pretty good, though I was a bit underwhelmed by the acoustics mixed with the electrics (decay seemed too short).

But I'd sure like to hear all this without Maxx-ing it to the, well, 'max'! Not sure I could stand half an hour listening to that brittle high end...
