I agree that this would be a great feature to have in some form: either a standalone executable for Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. or as a VST or AU plug-in (or why not both?). Considering the Wavestation patches can be rebuilt in the HD-1 engine it should be a matter of mapping out the HD-1 program space, figuring out which existing samples from Kronos and Oasys represent which waveforms on the Wavestation series counterpart(s), mapping the Wavestation SysEx parameters and applying conversion from there. (It is actually a bit more complicated since wave sequences are stored globally, but the basic idea stands.)
I'm currently in the process of reverse-engineering the AL-1 program space (honestly, I got the Kronos to take the place of gobs of my VA's so this was a natural place for me to start). It looks a little weird so far but I'll probably have the whole thing mapped by the end of the week.
If anyone would like to assist I'll just need a hand finding information on Wavestation patch layout and if anyone else has started reversing the HD-1 program space that could be most helpful also.

backwards compatability is a BIG ADVANTAGE any way you can look at it.
I spent hundreds of hours programming M1 , Dw8000 , Wavestation , Etc... my gear list is indicative ... a universal translator is something, everyone would use.....

hup hup ! .. for the brains that can do this extraordinary challenge. my hat goes of to you in thanks & praise.

I've been thinking about recreating the Wavestation on the Kronos. So far I've written two programs, one to interpret the Wavestation performances and data and one to interpret the Kronos wave sequences and data. I have to combine them somehow but haven't figured it out yet. Too many things on the go right now.

HOW TRUE! I have my 01/Wr because I can't part with those sounds. With waveshaping available as an IFX, there's part of me that really wants to translate my main set of 400 progs/combis and be able to offload it. Conversion aside, I feel pretty confident the Kronos could do dead ringer for nearly all those sounds. It's also why I'm GREEDY for MORE program banks on the Kronos! Then I could sell the 01 and make some space! Pretty sure nearly all of the previous workstation waveforms are in the Kronos from M1 to Triton.

For O1/W waveshaping sounds, use the MOD-7 (per-voice waveshaping) instead of effects.
