Yahoo Groups shutting down soon

Post by Mighty Motif Max »

Hi everyone,

I didn't see a thread on this here so I thought I should give you all a heads up. I hope this is the right place to post.

Yahoo is shutting down their Groups site. New uploads and content will be locked starting on the 28th of this month, and all data will be erased on December 14th. The email system will remain functional for an unspecified amount of time, but knowing Yahoo (i.e. GeoCities), I wouldn't count on much.

The Yahoo Groups platform has a TON of synth and music stuff, some dating back to the mid 1990s. All of this will be lost when the platform is erased. Some moderators are migrating to groups-dot-io but that company now raised the fee for transferring groups to $220 (USD). Many groups have been dead for years, but still have patches, tech and repair info, and a lot more; sadly there is no one to migrate them as the admins are gone.

I am working on archiving as many groups as I can (also have some "life events" this weekend and the next so I'm not able to do as much as I'd like to). I'm using PG Offline, which seems to work. You can download an entire group's messages, or just the files, photos, or links too (to folders on your PC). Messages are stored in SQLite but can be exported to HTML and more, meaning it can be added to a new forum or an existing one. Free 30-day trial or about $25 for it; Windows only. The developer is actively working on adding group.io export too. I can't do all of the thousands of music groups, not by a long shot. I would encourage anyone here who wants a certain group's information to use that program and quickly before the lockdown on the 28th - I don't know how that is going to affect the system. The only wrinkle is that you must be a member of any group you want to save. Sadly with some of the dead "restricted"/closed groups that means you would have had to have been a member prior to it fading out; there's no one to approve you now.

Hope this can help somebody. If you decide to archive any groups, please comment below with which one(s) you have done.

Thanks,

-Max

i just killed 8 of my groups over on yahoo

Post by iowagold »

i just killed 8 of my groups over on yahoo.
yea, most groups are dead...
giving way to face book, and a few other big name portals..

for me the yahoo groups were not promoted!!
that is a big deal!!

so back to private phpbb groups on our own private servers...
it will be almost as bad as going back to the early 1980's and basic bbs!!

I always have all my data on local servers and backed up on rom dvd optical data disc's.

it is getting harder to give back to the community for free!!

now with youtube going big time with the unplugged video bunch...

hard to tell where to be for good exposure for low cost!!

I for one appreciate what Sharp does for me as an artist an studio owner and the korg community!

the day the korg forum shuts down will be the day I will unplug!!

g'day mega! yea rip for sure!!
at least sharp has a handle on this group.
so with all the ads and junk mail from the yea hoo's on yahoo
I would think they would make a go at it!!
or at least make a few million!!
so what happened is the big issue!! and question!!
so did facebook groups make that big of dent in it??

when they stopped promoting the yahoo groups that is what killed most of the ones I was interested in....
just a few die hard members... heck we private e-mailed more than open group posted!!
lol or just grabbed the phone and called!!
groups is nice for making good repair parts contacts in other country's...

now that dhs here in the states is making pressure on groups..
I could see a closed just to the usa internet in the near future!!

I stopped shipping electronics out of the usa back in the 1980's when the guys over in the middle east were using our radar detectors for cars in the jets!! no kidding!!
escort radar detectors would detect other jets or sam's!!
and for 500.00 to 1000.00 usd!!
way cheaper than the mill spec systems!!
and with a lead cell sla battery to run the 12 volts they would get the 10 hours of flite time!!

so that is what started our dhs!! they put an end to tech going out of usa!!
now days they still get out...

just like all the data... no real way to stop it!!

soooo  why do we not make a music internet!!
yea a bit like 1984!! lol!!
but we could have some thing good!! and private like our own bbs back in the day!!
our own version of facebook just for music!!
only music ads, and only our venders!!
HUMMMM>>> there might be something there!!

When Marissa Meyer took over Yahoo, the groups website was re-crafted into an almost unusable mess. There were many issues. Threads were difficult to follow, for example. It was only a matter of time that this would happen!

the no promotion of groups

Post by iowagold »

the no promotion of groups
is what has my nickers in a bunch...

at one time they even did tv promotion of yahoo groups!!
at least on the national networks...

phpbb works ok... that is the software I am going to use..
and is the same as this forum that sharp has.

sure it has it's days where the updates kill the database till it is updated as well..

but all in all it works as an ok platform!!

I am surprised there is not a class action against yahoo yet!!
lots of folks had lots of time invested in the groups!!

I knew about it last year in 2018...
it was at one of the IT conventions... after dinner drinks at one of the bars I had zeroed in on a private conversation that yahoo groups would be done by 2020..

market share and no funding... then the bad code writers did not help any!!
oh well we all need to take a lesson from this!!

back up your data to local optical drives!!
then if you have to move, you have it all in house!!
nothing is more secure than optical back up!!
pull the discs every night and in to the fire vault!!
slim small easy to store!!
just tip from some one who has been there and done that!!
