New Korg kronos or Kronos X

Hi,

I was looking to get my first korg kronos, and I was wondering if it is worth it to get the New one or the Kronos X. I was also debating whether to get the 73 or the 61 as I had seen the 88 in the store and determined that it was too big for my studio.

Bought a used X, much cheaper, not as good looking as the new one, but still good looking. And it can with a frackload of expansions and sounds..

Giving me an almost perfect keyboard combo,...

Works great for me...

The choice between 61 and 73 keys should not so much be based on size but rather what kind of key action you prefer. The 73 is weighted and the 61 is semi-weighted.

To bad there is no 76 semi weighted keybed option... Quite some people would have loved that..

Yes, discontinuing the 76 note model was crazy. Made absolutely no musical sense. It had to be a decision by some engineer. I'll shut up now. This is one of my main pet peeves.

i think you are referring to a semi weighed.

From what I recall, the 76 weighed keys were heavily requested. Plus most semi weighed needs are filled by a 61 key. No doubt the sales #'s also supported this.

I suppose some might say its crazy , if they disagree.

Apparently an engineer and a real world musician are worlds apart. For the last 20+ years all Keyboard Synths (workstations at least) came in 3 flavors.
61 Semi-weighted
76 weighted
88 weighted
It worked. Perfectly for so many reasons.
Then out of the blue Korg took out 3 keys from the middle guy and weighted it. Very odd

Not to add insult to injury, but from 1990 had free 5 days a week free and helpful tech support. Then a few years ago it went to 3 days a week to now... NO over the phone tech support.. Very odd

And to top it off are Very tight on their library. It can ONLY be purchased through their site. Not from any other authorized dealer or music store...Very odd

I don't think its all that different but I coykd be wrong. I think it all depends on your budget.

Top of the line boards were also a LOT more expensive in the early days, especially counting inflation.

The new Kronos has the EXs17 and EXs18 pre-installed which would cost an additional $299 to add to the older Kronos. Also a few additional hardware tweaks that are worth a few dollars like wood ends and gold plated I/O jacks but other than that it's pretty much the same.

The new Kronos has a different system board so that may be important for future support issues.

lots of things have changed since 1990.

The Internet became commonly/inexpensively available. All companies rushed to build online stores/sites to be relevant. For Korg to offer products/software libs online is to be expected. It is more cost effective as their is not a brick and mortar type middleman.

This community based forum is an excellent resource for technical questions and there are expert/experienced owners that have done all types of repairs.

The cost of top of the line synths has declined dramatically. In 1990, hammond/leslie, Rhodes/wurli , mini moog/etc rig could easily top $10,000
for keyboard player.

In comparison, the Kronos could be viewed as a ' best of times ' keyboard as the enthusiasm for it attests.

I don't find any of this to be ' odd' or an insult or some type of injury, etc.
