This feature intrigued me so I looked all over Youtube to see if I could find an example of its use. No joy. I downloaded the PSR-2000 User Manual and read the entire Style section and could find no references to this feature. Got any links to an example or page number in the user manual where it explains how it works? Sounds interesting, I may just purchase a used PSR-2000/2100 if I can figure out how this feature works.

You don't really have to go that far.
Just visit the nearest music shop and prepare a pen drive with some MIDI songs in it, make sure some of them are with and others without chord track in them, so you can check out how it work both ways. Play a song, press style Start/Stop button, trigger a chord and see what's gonna happen. Try even changing styles while the song is running.

To be honest I haven't tried it personally on any other PSR post 2001 simply because I haven't owned one since, but I am pretty sure every PSR-S series up to Tyros 5 still has it. Mere fact that this post was placed here, confirms that such thing still exist.
It is true that in the PSR2000 manual does not say a word for it, it isn't a 'specially named' feature, it may be left as a 'easter egg' there, or it's just a fortunate software artefact, or the more plausible...simply due to the fact that there's lack of separation of those two modes (Style/Song) and they can co-insist and compliment each other. I think it is an intuitive thing to have since style and song players has completely different controls.

I also understand that the presence of the Song Mode and Style Mode buttons on Korg clearly states "Do not mess one with the other, otherwise you may hear some demo songs", and means to me that such feature will never be implemented, simply because it will make those two buttons obsolete and pointless real estate on the panel.

First of all thanks to everyone who contributed to this discussion.

So Sam CA said that I can import non-transposable midi into the pad. How do I do that? I tried using import menu but it does nothing when I press "import" button.

Not sure if I can find an example on youtube right now but you can find information about playing midi with style on page 53 of PSR-S970/770 Reference Manual.
When playing back a Song and a Style at the same time, channels 9-16 in the Song data are replaced with
Style channels—allowing you to play the accompaniment parts of the Song yourself. Try playing chords
along with the Song playback as shown in the instructions below.

1 Select a Song.

2 Select a Style.

3 While holding down the SONG (STOP) button, press the (PLAY/PAUSE) button to enable synchronized start of the Song.

4 Press the STYLE CONTROL [ACMP] button to turn on the auto accompaniment
function, then press the [SYNC START] button to enable synchronized start of the
accompaniment.

5 Press the STYLE CONTROL [START/STOP] button or play chords in the chord section. The Song and Style starts playing. When you play chords, pressing the [SCORE] button and turning CHORD on (page 49) allows you to see the chord information.

NOTE When playing back a Song and a Style at the same time, the tempo value set in the Song is automatically used.

NOTE The Style Retrigger function (page 13) cannot be used during Song playback.

When the Song playback is stopped, Style playback is also stopped at the same time.

Actually I was only referring to Audio Groove for "non transposing" material.

For standard midi track, you can use anything. (one track per pad)

valio7771 wrote:The mechanics of the internal style transposition has no effect on the MIDI song at all. ............bla bla bla...........I promise you I've had that keyboard for 8 years and I wasn't delusional every time I was using this feature, it's a real working thing.

ok so in that case the Chord progression of the Style would have to follow the Chord progression of the midi file otherwise wrong chords would be slamming against each other. In order to have more control over the chord progression (for the Style) you would need to MUTE any track that has harmonic content and just let the non-transposing midi tracks play. That's pretty darn close to what PADs do with Korg models.

I imagine you could also run a solo melody through a midi file and use the Style for the Chord progression, but that's also something you could do with pads. In fact you can do more with Pads. You can use melodies, transposing and non-transposing material. You can choose for pads to transpose or keep playing in the original key regardless of what chords you play.

I still have to read the manual for the PSR keyboard, but from what it seems, you can only use a very limited version of a midi file to get musical results. Not all 16 midi tracks would be useable. A lot of tracks have to be muted. Even if you run the style with the same exact chords, still a lot of tracks have to be muted. That's probably the reason why Korg chose to go with pads as oppose to running a midi file. You have more control this way for live performance.

Obviously, you had the keyboard for a long time and know about this, but I'm only questioning the obvious here.

Sam, how can I simplify it even more? Try this way:

Step 1. Start the Song...
once Step 1. is executed, go to Step 2.

Step 2. Press the Style's Start/Stop button any time you feel happy to do so, or repeat pressing it on and off as many times you'd like to...while the song is currently playing.

IN THIS ORDER!!!

If you execute Step2. before Step 1., the Song player will immediately stop the currently played Style and start playing the Song in it's own tempo and key, completely ignoring what you where doing while playing the Style second ago. Ok, now we assume you can hear the Song is currently playing, and if you press Style's Start/Stop button, you will hear the Style start playing along in the same tempo and key(if chord track is available in the Song) with the Song.

We have Styles 'slaved' to the Songs, and than we have the Pads 'slaved' both to Styles and Songs. This is the hierarchy:

Song>Style>Pads

Style is serving like a 'Pad' for the Song, it follows/being driven/subordinate to the Song that already plays. Imagine it as having a one BIG Pad that has 8 instrument tracks in it, but this time you have real time control over it, and start thinking for each Style in the keyboard is a different 'Pad' preset, that you can choose to enrich/personalize the Song. And than you have the 4 physical Pads itself on the bottom of all that 'slavery', that in their turn will also follow what they are being 'told to' by the Song or the Style.

English is NOT my native language, but seems it IS your native language, even so, I think I've been sufficiently clear and detailed in all of my previous statements so far. Please let me know if my typing is total gibberish to you. If you're able to understand me and still think that that's the 'obvious' in what you're asking here, this means to me you either trying to mock me, or deliberately evading to understand what I'm talking about for a reason incomprehensible to me!
Thoraldus was also unfamiliar to that function but he picked it right up from the previous posts already. Ask him for a better explanation if you think I'm to difficult too understand.

valio7771,
First thank you for your explanation and second Sam is a respectful and professional musician and member here and he tries to help everyone here with different questions. I am certain his intention is just technical and professional. Please be friendly. It could be everyone asking these kind of questions just by curiosity because we don't have this option in our Korg PA keyboard and it is not aimed to mock anyone here.
Thank you for your comprehension and peace. :D

My apologies to Sam CA, I admit I was a bit sarcastic at the end of that last post, but I didn't meant to derogate or undermine his rating as a Platinum member. I believe he helped a lot of users here, and still doing it. But I was a bit confused about him understanding everything in reverse order of what I was trying to explain for that silly 'function', to extension that I felt like I was being picked on, considering his rating here and the supposable level of comprehension that comes with it, while I am just a 'rookie' here, seemed we where talking 2 different languages. That's why I said that at the end, sorry one more time.

Peace!
