PA2X USB MIDI Issue - Tech Support Needed Please

Post by cleverr1 »

Hi,
I've just installed DrvTools_e(1.14_r4) for my PA2X on Windows 8 32 bit.

When I connected the USB cable the PC recognised the PA2X and installed something. However I cannot see the PA2X as a MIDI device.

The installation didn't offer up the "Would you like to install this device software" box as described in the manual.

The Device Setup windows just locks up halfway, but there is an event in the system log:
"Driver Management concluded the process to install driver korgumdn.inf_x86_0feab8a1beb3a1bb\korgumdn.inf for Device Instance ID USB\VID_0944&PID_011D\5&25482455&0&1 with the following status: 0x0."

and the Korg "Uninstall KORG USB-MIDI Device" sees the PA2x.

If I uninstall the PA2X and then reconnect this whole cycle repeats.

So it looks like the driver has installed, but no applications recognise the PA2X midi device.

Help Please!

Thanks,
Roger

This is still not working.

The Korg PA2x shows up in Device Manager using the following drivers:

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\KORGUMDS.SYS version 1.7.0.1
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KORGUMDC.CPL version 1.0.0.2
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\KORGUMDD.DRV version 1.14.0.4

and the device shows in the 'Configure Korg USB-MIDI Driver' utility.

So the system sees the device, but no MIDI applications can see the MIDI port.

I've tried uninstalling and re-installing.

Can anyone please help with this?

Have you tried using the latest midi driver for the PA2X from Korg ...

Thanks, but that link doesn't work here. Besides it's the current 1.14 version that's not working.

However, if you have any working links to the 1.13 or earlier legacy versions then please provide them - I'd be more than happy to test :)

I found the latest 1.14r9 version on the Korg USA website - that doesn't work.

I also tried 1.11 and 1.12 which were also on there - they don't work.

every time I did the following:

1) uninstalled the midi driver with the Korg utility (which was aware that the Pa2x was plugged in as it made me unplug it to continue)

2) uninstalled the korg midi driver application from the control panel

3) manually deleted any of the 3 driver files it may have left in system32 and system32\drivers

4) Rebooted

Every version was the same - the korg application was aware of the Pa2x but did not present a midi port that anything else (MIDIox, Cubase5, Cubase 7, Savihost) could see.

(Incidentally the korg.co.uk and korg.com sites are out of sync with their respective versions of these driver files. - But that's another story.)

There is clearly an issue here that needs some technical support. I can't think of anything else I could try with the tools made available.

How can I raise this with Korg please?

You've told us what you did to uninstall the drivers, could you share what you did to install them?

I'm not sure about Windows 8 as I only have that OS running on a tablet. But on Windows 7 you could end up with a lot of hidden com ports that would prevent certain devices from working as the available port numbers would be out of the range of the com device you're trying to talk to.

Here's a link that talks about a fix for that situation ...

Thanks for that.
I followed the steps in the article and can only see com1 and lpt1 under ports.

The installation steps I took were:
run installer as administrator
next
agree
next
next
typical
finish
connect Pa2x
run configure Korg USB MIDI Device as administrator
Install

Everything in the Korg USB MIDI apps looks normal, but no MIDI port is presented.

It's probably worth noting that my BCR2000 MIDI works fine over USB as does a cheap USB-MIDI interface, so the issue is specific to Korg.

If you look under the START - KORG - KORG USB DRIVER TOOLS you should find three programs ...

Configure Korg Driver Setup Utility
Configure KORG USB-MIDI Driver
Install KORG USB-MIDI Device

Be sure to execute the "Configure Korg Driver Setup Utility" and set it to AUTO.

Hi Thoraldus,

I raised a case with Korg Support yesterday, and they provided a fix! :D

Your suggestion about hidden com ports was so close - the maximum number of devices limitation also applies to wave and MIDI devices.

The 'Advanced Fix' part of the below link shows the fix:

http://www.cakewalk.com/Support/kb/reader.aspx/20090210

My system had a load of legacy M-Audio devices in there that hadn't removed cleanly when it was uninstalled.

Once they were deleted the system became receptive to new USB MIDI devices, so there was no problem with the Korg USB installation itself.

This will be so useful as I can now leave the MIDI port talking to an external module whilst also having a dedicated USB MIDI in/out going to the PC.

O.T. I'm finding the Pa2x (and an Access Virus module) to be the perfect tool for what I'm doing. I've got SongBook entries arranged as sets in custom lists that provide an mp3 backing track and any internal or external sounds I need at the same time. Beside that, I'd forgotten just how much fun it is to mess about with an arranger keyboard. :)
