ESX-1 effects problem?

This is probably something I'm doing wrong but I'll ask anyway.

I can't get ANY effects to work. At all.

It doesn't seem to matter what I do, whether it's having 1 effect or the full chain of all 3 effects, none of it makes ANY difference.

If I just select, say, the snare drum I'm using, and turn the effect knob to reverb and turn the level right up - nothing, no difference.
The sounds I'm trying to add effects to are standard drum sounds, not samples or anything.

I've tried doing this while a pattern is playing - nothing.

Is there something obvious I'm missing? It's really stopping me from using my ESX.
