Renting Kronos

I will be touring in Canada early June and it has been suggested that I should rent a Kronos there rather than bring my own. This raises two questions

1) Are such things easily rentable at reasonable prices?

2) What EXACTLY do I need to put on a flash drive from my Kronos here so that when I use a rented instrument, I'll be able to quickly make it behave properly. What about issues due to different versions of OS as well as add-on libraries?

If you ask for an X you at least won't run into compatibility issues with the OS etc. It would also prevent running into a keybed with the note cutoff issues. Alternatively, just bring a USB stick with the latest OS on it, just as if you were going to install it on your own Kronos.
As long as you're not using custom samples or changed the autoload KSC (so basically only edited programs and combis) it's really simple; just do "save PCG" to a USB stick and load it on the new machine.

If you changed sample autoloads or are bringing custom samples or songs you need to be a bit more specific.

David, If you purchased any libraries, you will not be able to use them on a rented instrument (unless you buy them again). Currently they are locked to a single Kronos forever.
This might be an issue for anyone who is considering working with rentals. The market for purchased libraries would likely increase if Korg could work out a way to grant a 1 week authorization on another instrument, or a mechanism to transfer authorization via a file on a USB stick.

I'd be very interested to know more about how I could extract the libraries so that they could be used on a hired Kronos.

We have done quite a few gigs where the backline is hired in in recent years. For example last year, before I bought the Kronos, I did a couple of gigs in Tokyo and all the keyboards were hired locally except for my Memotron , which came with me on the plane. That was pretty easy because it is a small keyboard and even in the flight case it wasn't too bad carrying it around. There is no way I would consider taking a Kronos 88 in a full flight case on a plane (I don't think they would even allow something that heavy through baggage even if I had a mind to do it !)

I love some of the sounds in the various libraries, in particular the Karo orchestral sounds, but have not bought one for the very reason that if I used them on the album we are recording, I wouldn't be able to recreate my Kronos set up on a hired machine.

I have been in correspondence with Karo and they intimated they needed clearance from Korg and then said that it was not possible to provide an unlock code for each hire company I might use. It's a shame because they have lost a sale because of this but unless I know I can recreate the sounds in any live situation I might encounter in the future, then I'm not going to use sounds from libraries on the orgininal recordings.

I'm not complaining; I fully understand that developers should be allowed to protect their intellectual property and it's a shame that so much illegal file transferring and breaches of IPR go on that are probably the underlying reasons. Wider , unauthorised distribution of library sounds is certainly not my intention - I just want to make sure the sounds I use on recordings can be re-created in live situations.

If ShaneFF has a work around though , I'd be really interested to know what it is.

The problem with this idea is that the software is tied to the serial number of the unit - you'd have to reauthorize it, and when you do - your purchased plugins won't work (or even worse, might be deleted during the reauth process). Add that to the whole 'voiding warranty and calibration' snit going on, and no rental place would let you do this.
