there was a sign on the wall :
the price for an ORI in Europe dropped 100 Euros short before Christmas

here is the starter link for the "Blue"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mGdyboJ ... WQ&index=2

200 sounds , aha
so some more samples ....
and some new double-algos
(still hoping for all original "94" Algorithms)

"Increased pickup precision provides improved dynamic range"
"A new input sensitivity parameter has been added"

-could mean some new EQ parameters
- a small booster for trigger signals?
Head / rim : "Hand / Fingertips" ?

... and the price increases one more step ....

(didnt see any USB/card ext.thingies ....)

The new Wavedrum Global Edition for 2013

I’ll spare you a lengthy narrative and just provide the facts based on the one prototype unit that I had a chance to evaluate. Some of the specifics may have changed since then, but this what I observed.

It is Blue.
The hardware is identical to the the previous versions (no midi or USB, etc).
There are 15 new algorithms.
There are 50 new PCM sounds for each region (rim and head).
There are no changes or additions to the Loop Phrases (at least in the version I had to work with).

The are some additional user controls in Global Mode. The most important being more control over the output volume, which has been increased significantly. There are a few new features included in Global Mode that I wasn’t able to decipher from the cryptic displays alone. I look forward to seeing the owner’s manual for a full explanation.

Fifteen New Algorithms (all double-size)
#46 - Snare (Z) 14 x 6
#47 - Snare (Acrylic) 14 x 6.5
#48 - Snare (Wood) 14 x 7.5
#49 - Snare (Wood) 12 x 6
#50 - Piccolo Snare (Brass) 13 x 4
#51 - Quinto
#52 - Conga
#53 - Tumba
#54 - Djembe (Fiber)
#55 - Djembe (CowSkin Hi)
#56 - Djembe (CowSkin Lo)
#57 - Cajon 2
#58 - Bass Drum + Snare Drum 3
#59 - Bass Drum + Snare Drum 4
#60 - Bass Drum + Snare Drum 5

The additional Factory Programs for the Wavedrum Global Edition are as follows:

156 - Djembe Cowskin Lo
157 - Djembe Fiber
158 - Dunduba
159 - Bata Drums

SFX
195 - Spacy SFX
196 - The Night of the Storm
197 - Praying for Rain
198 - Meditation Ball
199 - Terminator 2048

Some of the new PCM melodic sounds are quite nice. I haven’t the time nor inclination to list all of them, as the names alone won’t reveal much without hearing them. The pdf for these will likely be available soon.

All in all, the Global Edition isn’t vastly different from its predecessors, but if I were to recommend which Wavedrum version to purchase, this would be the one. Having more sounds is always a bonus, and the improved output levels should prove to be quite useful for practicing, performing and recording. Given a choice, I think Blue is the way to go.

There should be some audio examples of many of the new sounds available soon.

I've just noticed that the main page is now available.

Thanks WaveDrummer, Do you know if there will be a firmware upgrade as far as the output level for the old silver one?

Thanks

Nice!
I am considering a second Wavedrum in my studio for ages.
This might be the trigger to go for it.

I wish I knew but I just don't have any other info at this time. As in the past though, not having a USB port, or any other way to interface, makes such things difficult.
We will have to wait and see.

The other thing I forgot to mention about the new sounds is that the new piccolo snare sound [P.150] is a nice addition. With the previous Wavedrums, no matter how high you tuned the snare programs, it was impossible to get a decent piccolo snare sound. That Global Edition finally addresses that issue.

Thanks for the info on the new sounds and features, Wavedrummer. Just to be clear...ALL the sounds and programs in the Oriental WD are also included in the Global WD, correct? I was just getting ready to pull the trigger (on the Oriental) but will certainly wait for the new model if this is the case. Cheers!

Yes. As with previous versions of the Wavedrum, everything that's come before is included with the most recent model. All the versions are cool and very powerful in their own right, but waiting for the Global Edition will be worth it.

Briefly saw it at NAMM 2013

Post by shedboyxx »

I actually saw the Global at this year's NAMM show for the first time. I was there for other business reasons but did want to see a demo of it. That would have been especially cool if it was the model Steve Smith was playing with Victor Wooten and Frank Gambale in the Korg booth...but no room to even get in by the time I got there. :(

I did put some headphones on and played around with the Global for a few minutes. I have the Oriental and couldn't discern any major differences just tapping and playing a little bit - briefly.

I'd especially want to hear if any of the new versions of the acoustic instruments (like Pandeiro, Conga) or newer sounds (like Bata) responded more like the real instruments do. I can't use some of the sounds for the instruments modeled because they just don't play like the real thing. Not saying they can't be used but IME they do have to be 'managed' and the techniques have to be adjusted.

I'm sure I'll still want to upgrade one day but for now I haven't even put enough time into the Oriental. :p

I would say the new conga sounds are a bit better, and bring you closer to the real thing. I suppose the most ideal situation would be to have two or three Global Wavedrums if you wanted to get the most out of the new quinto, conga and tumba sounds.

As I see it, the main obstacle to applying traditional techniques to these sounds is still the size of the head. When you factor in the logo plate that protects the transducer, the actual playing area is considerably smaller than what you would have on even a 10" quinto.

As you say, the techniques do need to be "managed" as a result of that. I thought the bata sounds were one of the finer additions to the new program list. There will be some evidence of this on the way soon.

Stay tuned...
