Trouble connecting microkorg xl+ to the sound editor

Post by pingywings »

Hi, I got a microkorg xl+ yesterday (yay) and it plays like a dream, but I can't seem to connect it to the PC sound editor.

I have it plugged in via USB cable. The computer recognises it and installs all of the drivers ect. Then I open the sound editor and no data is being recieved. I press keys and no sound whatsoever. The Microkorg xl+ dosen't appear in the midi in section of preferences and when I click recieve data/program in the Midi drop down menu it says "Midi port not specified"
This is probably a stupid situation, but i'm fairly new to midi and don't really know what i'm doing.
Here are my other midi drivers incase that helps. Some other person I came across on these forums fixed their problem by uninstalling drivers. I just don't know what to uninstall

I have the microkorg's midi routing set to Midi+USB. I tried just USB but it had the same problem. Everything else is completely factory settings.

All korg drivers are up to date.

There might be alot of unnecessary information there, but thanks in advance for any help you may give :D

You need to get the Korg MIDI driver to show up somewhere between midi port 1 - 10. Uninstall those generic USB drivers AND the Korg driver from within that utility (make sure you have things like USB speakers, ipads/ipods, cameras removed from your computer; reinstall the Korg driver and it should reappear someplace in the 1-10 slot. Don't worry about those other generic USB drivers... They are plug and play drivers and will reinstall over time as you attach the devices

I had the same problem as you and the steps above fixed it. The Korg drivers now show up at 3 and 4 I think and I have never had another issue.

Good luck and let us know how it goes.

Thanks, it recognises it now. But now it says "KORG USB-MIDI driver is not installed. Some functions may not work correctly." I've re-installed the drivers and turned both the computer and the microkorg off and on again (tends to work). Still to no avail.

It also still says "Port is not specified" when I try to reviece data.

I seemed to have a second driver "KORG microKORG XL+" (without the <connected> bit) momentarily after reinstalling for the first time. I had no port issues then. But when I reinstalled again to try make the driver message dissapear, I was left with only one driver and the port issue.

Does being on a 64 bit OS matter? I might try get the sound editor to work on a different PC today.

Well, i've ended up with no error messages at all now. I clicked auto scan and it revieces data and programs and dosen't tell me my driver isn't working.

When I try and click it manualy every option comes up with the driver warning.

The problem: Even when I use auto scan no sound appears. I looked at the midi monitor window and values only change when I flick the octave switch or turn the tempo knob. Dunno if it should be doing more. Would it work if I got a Midi to USB cable instead of just using the USB slot? I heard it was slower but slow is better than no.

OOOOHHHH im an idiot.
I only just realised you have to have your headphones plugged into the microkorg not the pc.

Thanks for your help anyway!

I can let you know how my situation is going :)

I just got my new MicroKorg XL. Sounds beautifully, looks gorgeous.... but it won't work with the editor. I tried to unistall/reinstall everything, which means drivers and editor, 5 times. I followed step by step what they say on the StartUp guide. It's even more frustrating because it is recognized in the MIDI ports, it's in position nr. 2, so this shouldn't be the issue.
I tried with a friend's laptop and this time the issue is even different... It is recognized as a MIDI IN Device (which doesn't happen on my laptop) but if I try to receive the data from the MicroKorg another message appears, "microKORG XL is not connected on the specified port"
I am going nuts and I can't believe that the Korg is faulty, I don't think that giving it back is the solution. Drivers look just fine, they are in port 2 and 4.
Do you think I'm doing anything wrong? I am certainly not a pro when it comes to "computer stuff", but I'm not entirely retarded either...ahah. Any help would be much appreciated!
Cheers!

I had the same problem. The XL+ would not talk to the editor/librarian until I connected both MIDI and USB, and had the USB/MIDI driver running.

So here's my confusion... My microkorg XL+ works excellent in any program/DAW/sequencer using the USB connection, except it does not work in the Sound Editor Korg provided.
It cannot find the device connected on the selected midi port.

Selecting a different midi port, with or without official drivers installed, it doesn't change anything.

Is it just me or does it make no sense at all that the official software provided with this instrument is the only thing failing??

I'm going to try the old-school midi in-out connection when I'm back in my studio...

Yep,, the korg editor sucks donkeys in my opinion! I had some initial trouble getting it working when I first purchased my Xl+ which I posted on this forum, I managed to get it sorted, and it worked for a few weeks, but it's gone t*ts up again, I have tried everything possible to get it to work, but nothing! also when it was working, my pc seemed to be suffering from occasional start up failures ala' Blue screen, and restart required, the problem always went away on second re-boot, anyhoo, since the XL+ now fails to connect to the pc.. my pc starts up first time, everytime! as much as i liked using the sounds via the editor, I have had to give it up, it would seem it's problems could be pc specific.
