Taking the Kronos Touring

Post by ShaneFF »

Hi,

I have a question about touring with the Kronos. I'm currently working with a band that gigs 4-6 nights a week all over Ireland. We travel in a retrofitted Van. Its pretty much an ordinary huge van with extra crew room. Its getting close to the worst of Winter and I just took my keyboard out of the van and its case and its really cold. REALLY COLD. My question is should I be worried has anyone else had it in these sort of conditions? It is say in the manual that the operation temperatures should be between 5 and 35 degrees celcius. But could the storgae/transport temprature be lower than this? I could image that the back of the van could get down to 1/2 degrees...

Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated

Operating temperature is one thing, storage is another. In the past I have done gigs outside for Guy Fawke's night where the temp was probable near 1 or 2. Granted, not with a Kronos, but with other Korgs.

If I were gigging/touring again and using a Kronos, the one thing I would make sure I have is a UPS system to protect my Kronos like I would protect a computer/laptop.

Yup I have a small UPS. and it has come in handy a few times when soeone pulls plugs accidentally!

So you think the kronos can bear that kinda temperature?

I'm in a similar situation and my gear is often in the van! I do worry a little about it - but I try to get it into the venue and out of the flightcase and set, then leave it for half an hour or so before turning it on, when time allows. This gives it a chance to acclimatise, and I've had no problems so far. ( I use a UPS too ).

I had what appeared to be a condensation problem with a Roland RD piano a few years back during a very cold winter.

I was storing it in my adjoining garage after gigs and then on the next gigs the thing would power on and off from time to time when it first came out of the box. I therefore agree with the suggestions around letting it get to room temperature before turning it on and using a UPS

As another suggestion , I started putting a few of those little silica gel packs which absorb moisture inside the flight case with the keyboard and I never had a problem after that.

Im surprised you had a problem with one of thoese boards. I had one two and unlike the kronos it was built like a tank. I dropped it several times a glass of water was spilled on it, heavy stuff was dropped on it ( and it still plays great :D )

This is a great idea... Do you know anywhere you can buy these?

You can get them on Amazon. They're really cheap. Different sized packs so you'll find one size that fits snuggly in the case.
