Ah! If you ever get the chance to see the movie "The Commitments" (which is a must-see for anyone connected with the music biz) then all will be explained.

Joey the Lips is a character in the movie about a soul band being put together in Dublin, and he turns up in answer to an ad in the local paper for a trumpet player. When Jimmy, the band's manager asks him who were his influences, he reels off a who's who of soul and r'n'b greats.
