preferrable methods of recording kronos

i've found 3 methods so far, but what's frequently used is direct from usb and from stereo jacks to audio interface.. which did you prefer and explain why..

i've heard someone says that recording direct from USB sounds bright and thin compared when recording to interface.. is it true???

I use jacks but that is because I want to use my normal audio interfaces at the same time.

As long as you are happy with 48K then recording directly from USB or SPDIF should give you the 'best' quality as there is no D/A and A/D conversion going on which will alter the original sound.

If people think that the USB is bright and thin it means that their audio interface is altering the sound in some way to something they like more or are maybe are more used to.

I tend to use the jacks because I like to work in 44.1 in my DAW. I haven't noticed a difference when using USB audio.

Does any one else convert to wavefile in the kronos?

I have done this for sending high fidelity wavefiles via internet for recording projects for clients.

I run my audio/out line cables[left/right] to my firewire audio interface in
@24bit/192 khz routed to my DAW. I also run through in/out my MIDI
cables to my interface that are also routed to my DAW. I record the signals
simultaneously capturing all 3 signals; right audio; left audio; and MIDI.

i don't know, but when i sample to wav, the gain is really low.. did i do wrong??

1jordyzzz after the mix did you....bounce to disk (in Audio Input/ Sampling)?

My work was for a recording project and the engineer was happy with the quality. I did not listen to the final wavefile but It must have been good. I sent it via E-Mail to him.

In response to this post,shall describe my method of audio recording,which am spoilt for choice really and haven't finally decided the best method,yet.
Have only done very basic trials so far and will probably change or adjust things later.

Kronos jacks out to a mixer.
Mixer out to a FireWire interface (A cheap one,but seems to work ok).
FW via Cubase,or Audacity onto the hard drive of an iMac.
(All audio connections are balanced and are free from interference….so far).

Or

Kronos via usb,Cubase,iMac.

Or

Kronos via mixer,then via active monitors with an usb interface,Cubase or Audacity etc.

So,the choice is analogue,hybrid analogue/FireWire or hybrid analogue/ usb.
Or direct usb,from the Kronos.
So far I can't distinguish much between any of them,the mixer route provides some additional eq,but could possibly have the drawback of adding some unwanted noise,the Kronos usb seems to have the edge,but for me,not too much difference overall.

The mixer also provides the audio to three pairs of monitors,of course being the common link,the overall sounding,"mixer colour", will have its own influence.
Perhaps during proper final mixing I may re route the audio directly via the monitors,however,so far I am fairly pleased with the sounds via the mixer etc.

All of this may well change over time as I make better recordings and get a grasp of the techniques……still learning !!!

Must add,that I only do this for pure pleasure….. (an expensive hobby,though)….being another bedroom muso etc; the final results are not that critical anyway.
The destination being a bonus,after the enjoyable journey.(Not always a smooth one though….).

So my vote will be the audio out route,via interface.(Cubase itself being an interface...).

Yes i convert all my songs to wav. I use them with the setlist function for live performance.
I also converted all of my wav's to MP3 and put them in my phone. In that way, if my Kronos should fail on a gig(heaven forbid

) I can plugg my phone in to the mixer and use my Roland AX

I record my Kronos direct from the audio out to two tracks on my D3200 DAW, with other keyboards to other tracks.

1. I then mixdown and transfer the song to Bias Peak for mastering.

or

2. Transfer the multi-track session to Digital Perform, edit and other recording before mixing down and mastering in Peak.'

I copy the completed songs to iTunes, from there I burn to C D, keep copies on my iPOD.

I keep the songs in AIFF format through out the process.

I think that is pretty clever. Wouldn't have thought of it myself and I'm a genius! Just ask me!

On another note, I'm possibly the only person here not using a computer to record music. I use a table-top recorder and have to use the audio outs from my Kronos. I use these because I have no other way of getting sound into my recording system. I'm actually not even in a hurry to get a computer to record on as I'm happy with the sounds that I get. Sure, I know I can then have access to truckloads of plug-ins but knowing me, that;s just going to interfere with me making music and that's why I have a Kronos. Along with a bunch of other things. I'm much more into hardware anyway.

This is a very interesting thread! So far, 82% voted that they use the L/R outputs connected to an interface, which is what I usually do also. My Kronos outs 1-4 are going to an 8-input converter (then via FireWire to the Mac) and I just find it convenient to run everything at 44.1 kHz.

The interface (Metric Halo) is very hi-quality, so, although I sometimes use USB or the optical (SP/DIF) ins/outs, I must admit that my ears are too old and noise-abused to hear much if any difference.

Another thing I find convenient is to simply record, edit, loop, and optimize samples via the computer and then transfer them into Kronos as 48 kHz WAV files, rather than sampling directly into Kronos. Bias PEAK used to be a great tool for this, I really mourn its passing.

Has anyone actually gotten the USB audio interface to work on Windows? I decided to try it and could not get it to work. I'm using Windows 7 and I also have Cubase 5. In the Control Panel the Kronos shows up as an output (given the name "headphones") but there is no input there. In Cubase I can select the DirectX driver, but it gives a warning that there are no input channels available so recording is not possible. I'm not sure if my computer's Realtek onboard audio interferes with any of that.
