It depends on the FX. Some FX like delays, panning etc are more usefull if they could be tied or synced with the tempo of the sound unit. With an external FX you can apply it to the overall sound only, in the R3 you can assign different FX to the each timbre first and then to the sum.

@ rukaav: It is not a shame that the 2006's R3 has only 8 voices. I think that the FX sections, the vocoder (which at least has 32 BPFs, 16 VCAs) and the other extra features that are not concerned with sound generation (which the NL2 doesn't have) uses more than 60% of the R3's processing power.

The NL2 is more to be used in conjunction with additional studio equipment while the R3 offers more sound power out of the box which is what fits more the actual needs of the OP

Personally I think the Nords in general have a nice penetrating metallic tone that I have trouble getting out of other synths, even the R3.
A buddy of mine owned the Nord Lead 2x and the FM feature functions exactly like the cross modulation feature in the Radias & R3. Osc 2 modulates Osc 1. I would say that the VPM feature in the Radias/R3 sounds closer to DX7 style FM.

Oh GOD I loved the DX7's sound! It was mainly because it was really close to the YM2612 Soundchip, Wich The Sega Genesis had, And I really love the classic Sega Genesis / Megadrive sound

The DX7 Is just like a much more complex and powerful version of the YM2612, Wich was insanely great. If the R3's VPM Synthetis can get anything close to the DX7 then that's one plus that I would TOTALLY love  .

I don't really know what to say about this. I'm both a heavy studio producer (Well not really studio since I only use a basic PC and that's it, But not saying that I want to use only the PC;), And an on-the-go player too. By that I don't mean that I play live in clubs, bands or anything. I mean that mostly everywhere where I go I have something with me to practice music with anytime I want to. For example, Now I'm actually at my father and I'm using my DS with Korg DS-10 And M01 really often

And about the whole Built in FX or External FX VST, Built in FX Could still be a plus, As the R3 Is so portable that I could easily take it with me anywhere, and Still have all of them great Korg FX with ease...

I'm still pretty undecided. The R3 didn't sound flat at all to me. When I heard it and played with it while it was being outputted trough a simple Peavey KB2, It sounded incredibly awesome to me. I think I will go for the R3 though. I really wish I could test the Nord somewhere, though. To be honest, when the guy from the shop played it so I could hear it, I almost cried. I don't really know wh . But not in a bad way, no no. :)

Also, I want to thank all of you guys for so much answers to my forum. This is exactly what I'm looking for. I love the way this forum is going.
I really can't thank you guys enough

Keep in mind the FX really tweakable (they average at least half a dozen parameters) and can be applied to the audio-in though your timbres. Since you can set each timbre to have Audio-In as its waveform, as I said before you could have 2 effects on each and a master FX on the whole thing, making the R3 a crazy MFX unit, which in itself kicks ass. Combine that with synthesis modelling and you can really mangle input.

Just wondering, but would a Nord Modular G2, Access Virus TI/TI2 or a Korg R3 be the best when it comes to FM, Phase Distortion synthesis, AM and Cross mod?
Help me help you help you

All those things are different names for the same thing. I think the R3 and Virus have a very limited number of operators (2? 4?). The Nord, being modular, can possibly do more. Or just get a second hand DX7 for like no money at all.

The nord modular.

Because it is modular you can chain oscillators (operators) in any way you want..

Modular synth programming isn't for everyone though. I love it and started out with software programs like Reaktor and SynthEdit, and it's a great way to understand how all synthesizers work.
