Cross Modulation

Post by BasariStudios »

Any tips on Cross Modulating would be apreciated...especially on AL-1
which i dont think its really possible in the true way.

Thanks

The best option for Cross Modulation (aka FM Synthesis) is the MOD-7 where you get 6 operators and one operator can even take any multisample or the audio input as a base waveform. You can wire the Operators as you wish. Great power here :wink:

With AL-1 you also have FM Synthesis, but you just have 2 operators with a fixed wiring. I don't see why AL-1 doesn't provide real FM Synthesis considering it gives you the neccesary elements for each operator:
- An oscillator and here you're able to morph the waveform so there's interesting potential here.
- A mixer to allow you to change the relative levels between the operators: in FM there's no need of filters, just change the amplitude of the operators.
- An envelope generator controlling the level (amplitude) of each operator.
- A method to set the ratio between operators. This is done with FM Amount and you can even individually detune each oscillator, giving you variations with the ratios for each key.

The fact that you just get 2 operators is perhaps limiting but certainly you can have FM Synthesis. You must set all levels to zero in the Mixer except for Oscillator 2 and you must disable the Filters.

BTW, I'm writing this based on the knowledge I've got from the great Synth Secrets article regarding FM Synthesis

Thanks Mar,
nice post, i know about FM CM but AL-1 could have been more flexible.

What do you mean by 'cross modulation' exactly ?

On Roland analogue synths (Jupiter 8, JX-8P) XMOD was an amplitude modulation (AM) of VCO or DCO 2 by VCO or DCO 1.

JX-8P, sample waveforms output by XMOD-ed DCO2

• DCO1 waveform = square, f(DCO1) = 1/8 . f(DCO2) :

• DCO1 waveform = saw, , f(DCO1) = 1/8 . f(DCO2) :

Cross Moduation in Korg-Speak is phase modulation aka FM.

What is the "true way?"

As others have noted, the definition of "cross modulation" will vary depending on the synth. Various definitions include sync, FM, ring modulation, and AM - all different methods of audio-rate modulation between the two oscillators. The AL-1 includes all of these methods.

I had to bring this up again...Dan or anyone...i meant more in the way
the MOSS used to have...it was a fixed Oscilator type but i forgot the details
which also means it can be reproduced with AL-1.

This is taken from the MOSS Manual but i dont understand it:

Cross Modulation
This uses a modulator to frequency-modulate a carrier.
You can select one of four waveforms as the carrier.
In general, a pitch envelope is applied to the modulator.
A carrier oscillator is built-in to the Cross
Modulation OSC. You can select the output of the
other oscillator etc. as the modulator.
By modifying the pitch of the modulator oscillator,
you can produce characteristic cross-modulation
effects.

Thanks

I don't have a MOSS synth here, so I can't listen to what it actually sounds like. However, judging from the *diagram* in the manual, I'm guessing that the text is incorrect: modulation is of amplitude, not frequency. That would make sense in the context of the other osc types:

VPM = FM
Ring Modulation = Ring Modulation
Sync = Sync
Cross Modulation = AM (Amplitude Modulation)

Thanks Dan, i was guessing so too, somewhere else it was also mentioned as Phase Modulation.

The Moss has one advantage over the Kronos analog synths i.e Mod-7 or AL-1 which is a dedicated Cross Modulation sound engine. There is a workaround in Kronos by using the AL-1 but it does require lots of work to achieve good result.

For example, in the MOSS you have this setup:

**Cross Modulation**

Input: (wave form) let us say Triangle
Carrier: Triangle

Edge: xx
Modulation Depth: xx

Is there a way to achieve direct Cross Modulation in Kronos?

I may be missing something but this seems specifically something MOD7 would be good at?

Actually, for the MOSS "cross modulation" (amplitude modulation), the KRONOS provides everything that MOSS did and more. Both the AL-1 and MOD-7 include amplitude modulation as part of the ring modulation circuit. While MOSS allowed only a dedicated triangle wave to be used as the carrier, both the AL-1 and MOD-7 allow use of complex waveforms, noise, and external inputs.
