Hi,
I am having difficulty getting a really good brass sound from my Korg PS60 and I was wondering if anyone has suggestions for the best brass patch to use, or perhaps you have customized one to sound better than the default. I currently use 15 - TOP SECTION in default mode.
Thanks.

brass sounds
You can copy a brass sound to an other cathegory and layer up to 6 brass instruments in the same time. It is also interesting to layer brass sounds with synth sounds.

True brass instruments get brighter as you play higher/louder. Programming "real-er" sounding brass means you have to know how that works and try to imitate what happens in nature.
One trick I like to use is to route velocity to the EQ as a modulator control. So you'd set your EQ balance to maybe 40:60 (wet to dry ratio) then have velocity ad up to ~50% more FX -- you want to add a bump to mid range and high end. It gives you a brighter sound as you play harder without having that same full-on, ff, harsh sound at low volumes.
Another thing to consider, for writing combis at least, is what the instrument range is and what you'd have if you were writing parts for several players rather than using your fingers on a keyboard. So you want to use Bari sax and Trombone in the left hand, Hard Trombone and Trumpet in the middle of the keyboard, and Trumpet and Tenor or Alto Sax in the higher registers.
Finally, listen with a critical ear to the master orchestrators of big-band brass sound; guys like Count Basie, Glen Miller, Maynard Fergeson and others from the 40's to the 60's who did all their tunes without a synth playing brass parts!
If you want a real challenge, try to get mellow sounds like those used by Henry Mancini or Herb Alpert... use muted brass with a vibe/glockenspiel layer and see if you don't automatically find your inner Bacharach.

How do you copy patches to another catagory?
copyingh to another category
In the editor you have to be in "prog edit" page, then click on "utility" and "write program" - you will se the options, choose a category, rename it if you want, and so on. BTW: I have an edited piano on my homepage. Has anyone tried to write it to "any" category in the PS60?
