AKG K550 vs. DENON AH-D200 on Kronos
I obtained the new AKG K550 for comparison with the Denon AH-D2000 fed from the headphone output on my Kronos 61. I also measured the AKG K550 with a test jig using a Bruel & Kjaer 4135 1/4" laboratory standard microphone.
Both headphones had adequate loudness when fed from the Kronos. The AKG was not louder than the Denon even though it is rated to be more sensitive and of similar impedance. The AKG sounded brighter and did not have the power of the Denon in the low bass. The AKG has relatively low headband tension and is sensitive to a good seal for the best bass response.
When using sine wave test tones, the AKG was audible to 24 Hz on -20 dB test tones with the level set for no clipping on a 0 dB 20 Hz tone. The Denon was clearly audible to 13 Hz (the lower limit of hearing) using the same test. On 0 dB 20 Hz tones, the Denon had lower distortion.
Measured frequency response on both phones revealed much smoother high frequency response on the Denon and both extended to beyond 20 KHz.
The Sony MDR-7506 and MDR-V6 have adequate sensitivity on the Kronos and are a good low cost alternative. They are not as smooth or extended as the Denon, but have good low bass. The Sony MDR-7509HD and MDR-7509 are the most sensitive and very comfortable, but seriously deficient in low bass response and do not have extended high frequency response beyond 16 KHz despite Sony's claim of response to 80 KHz on the 7509HD.
I strongly suggest you try to audition the Denon AH-D2000 before you purchase the Beyer 880. The Beyer will probably require the use of a headphone amplifier for adequate volume using the Kronos.

I had the Denon AH D2000s. They are really great sounding headphones, especially for closed cans. My only issues with them were their size and one construction point. I found them a bit too large and hot for extended use. I also had issues with the small screw on one of the pivots. The one side kept falling off.

SEVERAL SONY HEADPHONES
Here are frequency response curves run by a well respected site. My tests on the 7509HD and 7506 produced similar results. I have not tested the Z1000s.

If you listen to pipe organ music with strong content down to 16 Hz you will hear obvious differences that correlate with these curves.

I don't understand the heated tone, Sina.
We're just comparing some personal impressions and some basic technical data.
Concerning both, the cheaper Sonys are nice for listening to music while offering good value for the price, but even the much more expensive 7520/Z1000s are IMO no match for the AKG 702 which I pefer (and that while the MDR 7520s are siginificantly more expensive than the AKGs here in Germany). The Sonys we discuss all have more or less weaknesses both in the low and high range, deliver no comparably neutral mix from my view, and don't place instruments as well in the room image as the K 702 do (which is a very important - and often underestimated - feature for me, while switching between headphones and nearfield monitors).
This is just my impression, like everybody has his own, and no reason to get involved in a heated personal debate.

It's probably nothing which can't be cured by proper treatment ...Sina172 wrote:I LOVE my 7509's for what they are and when I mix on them, I can actually feel the bass rattling on my head. It's a very sensational feeling.

Hi all! Newbie here... Sorry to comment on such an old thread. I've narrowed down my headphone search for kronos 2 to Beyerdynamic DT880 pro, so based on the above comments I assume I'll be needing an amp/DAC for the 250 ohm version? Or I can just get along and start using it straight from kronos for the moment.
Any help would be appreciated.
